Set amidst the fertile farmlands and lush hinterland that makes this Northern Rivers area so treasured, Bangalow’s Sample Food Festival returns this weekend and is absolutely worth jumping in the car for.
Now in its ninth year, the Sample Food Festival is the ultimate progressive dining experience, minus the price tag and white tablecloths, where dozens of the region’s best chefs and restaurants come together in one magical location.
Gathering at Bangalow Showgrounds on Saturday 7 September are celebrated local restaurants including La Casita, Raes on Wategos, Harvest Newrybar, Bang Bang, No Bones, Barrio, Shelter, Yulli’s, Federal Doma Café, Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. and many more.
Dishing up popular teasers from their menus, sample plates are super affordable meaning you can easily walk your way through a number of mini courses, or bring a friend or three and try even more.
Our very own Alex Munoz Labart from Restaurant Labart will be joining celebrity chef and paddock-to-plate pioneer Matt Moran, along with guest chef Federico Zanellato of LuMi Dining Sydney, on the judging panel of the ultra-competitive Golden Fork Awards, which sees Sample restaurants battle it out to win the title of best $5 or $10 tasting plate of the year.
As Alex explains, “We’re very lucky on the Gold Coast to be so close to the Northern Rivers region and the incredible produce it has to offer. We source a lot of the seafood and vegetables on the menu at Labart from just over the border in Northern NSW. Sample Food Festival is a once-a-year opportunity to experience tasting plates from the best restaurants in the Byron Bay and Bangalow region, all in the one location. And for just $5 and $10 per plate, it’s got to be the best value foodie day out in Australia!”
If that is not enough to have you clearing your Saturday and firing up the group chat, there is also promise of over 100 market stalls by local designers and producers, live music, children’s activities, plus cooking demonstrations from attending chefs that will come to a head at the TAFE Celebrity cook off.
To keep you hydrated through the day, award-winning Byron Bay brewery Stone & Wood will serve a range of beers, alongside offerings of local wines from Jilly and spirits from Lord Byron Distillery, Cape Byron Distillery and Husk Distillers. Sold? You should be!
In addition to Saturday’s Sample Food Festival, a number of seriously tasty side events are happening in the days leading up to and following the festival, including a foraging and fermentation master class, plus food photography and styling workshops using both SLR cameras and mobile phones.
