Fremantle Biennale

Fremantle Biennale is back with its second edition from 1 to 24 November, and this time Esplanade Park is set to be flooded with a stunning light show.

WATERLICHT is a large-scale light installation by Dutch artist Daan Roosegaarde and will be making its first appearance in the southern hemisphere as part of the festival. The artwork stimulates a virtual flood and is meant to symbolise the effects of climate change on water levels around the world, fitting in perfectly with this year’s Biennale theme; UNDERCURRENT.

WATERLICHT is popping up in Esplanade Park for three evenings only, from 1 to 3 November, but the Biennale’s program is jam-packed with plenty of other sights to see thanks to the 40 local and international artists that are coming together to celebrate and reflect on what makes up our wonderful port city.

RADAR, a high impact dance show combining lights, electronic beats and live music, will be taking over B-Shed from 21 to 24 November. Then there’s South Mole Resort, a living installation of bungalows popping up at South Mole complete with tattoo parlour, museum, souvenir shop and day spa. And although we’re not sure where you make bookings, the Biennale website states visitors can stay a night in the hotel—perhaps it’s art, perhaps not, all we know is we’re intrigued.

And finally, you won’t want to miss the theatrical show Somnus, a co-production between Slovenia and Australia that’s taking over PS Art Space, and Unit, the Biennale’s answer to Sculpture by the Sea that’s headed for Fremantle’s shores for the duration of the festival.

Scope out all of these events and more here and make tracks for Freo in November.
