One Of The World’s Best Bars Is Opening In A Sydney Basement

Employees Only is an iconic New York City speakeasy. It's the total epitome of NYC—intimate, moody and sophisticated without forgetting the irresistible, thumping heartbeat of one of the world's most irresistible, enchanting cities.

The West Village Bar is opening a brand new Sydney location next month, and to be honest, we don’t know how to process this. To give you an idea of how next-level this place is, the NYC hot-spot is a regular feature on the ‘World’s Best Bars’ list. Co-founder Dushan Zaric is leading the Sydney version and bringing with him a bunch of the famous Employees Only cocktails and the bar's signature food.

Word is Employees Only Sydney will be heading to a heritage-listed basement on Barrack Street in the city. The precise opening date and menu are all pretty hush-hush at the moment, and all the secrecy is making it even more exciting. The legends behind it all have previously opened up locations in Hong Kong, Singapore and Miami, so we’re eternally grateful that Sydney is getting a shot this time.

Their flawlessly-executed cocktails are to die for—and are all due to make an appearance. Keep your eye out for the Provençal, mixed with lavender-infused gin (um yes please?), Herbs de Provence, vermouth and Cointreau.

And don’t get me started on the food, because their New-York styled bistro is going to bring you creations you never knew you needed. Fan-faves from the NYC will include steak tartare and a house-made cavatelli pasta.

Interior designer Tim Leveson is responsible for the look and feel of Sydney’s Employees Only. You’ll find signature elements torn from the West Village bar, like the bright red neon ‘Psychic’ sign.

In Sydney, you’ll be able to pull up a stool at the curved brass bar and witness cocktail masters at work, settle into a booth in the dining room, or while the night away in the private dining space with 30 of your mates.

If you’ve been lucky enough to visit the OG NYC establishment, then you’ll notice that this pop-up will be a little different. The founders explained that the Sydney market is unlike the New York one, so this pop-up will be catering to our own bar scene. Don't worry though, we love oysters and martinis just as much as any New Yorker, so there'll be plenty of that.
