A new year has arrived and Perth hasn’t stopped dishing out the goods. There are new bars, restaurants and cafes opening up all over town—a not so very subtle reminder that our city really is the bomb.com.
Here are 16 brand new Perth restaurants, cafes and bars to visit in 2016. You better hop to it, because we predict many more are coming!
#1 Richie’s Bar Pizza
South Fremantle
Richies Bar Pizza has landed in South Fremantle and answered the prayers of south-side pizza fanatics. Serving tasty woodfired pizza made with original Napolitan dough, Richie’s pizzas are delicious. We like the Carnivore—a tomato base, mozzarella, bacon, cacciatore and chicken—and the Vege (with bacon of course). Richie’s also serve bar food, salads, house made pasta and desserts (Nutella pizza, OMG). They’ve got a full bevvies list and they also offer delivery to residents nearby—winning!
#2 Odyssea Beach Cafe
City Beach
With one of the most beautiful views in Perth, Odyssea Beach Cafe serve seasonal produce in a modern Australian style that’s light, fresh and healthy. Menu starts include Korean spiced BBQ Linley Valley pork belly with cucumber, kimchi and blood plums and roasted bone marrow with a shallot, caper and parsley salad. Grab a seat on the deck, order up and enjoy a few wines from Odyssea’s sophisticated wine list.
#3 Late Night Valentine
Highgate
Highgate’s newest bar, Late Night Valentine, is the perfect spot for your next date night. With plenty of comfortable velvet booths to sink into and a whole lot of moody lighting, show your date a good time and order one of the sultry cocktails on offer. Short Order Burger Co are sometimes on hand dishing out their devilishly good burgers and on weekends, live DJs take to the decks.
#4 NeNe Chicken
East Victoria Park
NeNe means “Yes! Yes!” in Korean and that’s exactly what we say to NeNe Chicken in Victoria Park. Choose from the original, spicy, freaking hot, garlic, bulgogi, snowing vegetable, oriental green onion or lemon fried chicken varieties, all served with coleslaw and radish, or go half and half for $2 extra! If you’re wanting to max-out on Korean flavour flaves, NeNe Chicken also whip up a mean looking kimchi chicken burger. Yes! Yes!
#5 Gusto Gelato
Elizabeth Quay
It’s true, Leederville’s favourite gelato will be opening up shop in the new Elizabeth Quay come April. Making its home in the landmark ‘pink diamond’ building, the crew will be churning their delicious gelato on the daily. And if the Leederville opening is anything to go by, they may offer free gelato on opening day too!
#6 Wok St Chow House
Northbridge
Wok St Chow House serve Asian street food to the early and late-night Northbridge crew—think crispy pork belly, traditional pad thai, drunken noodles and mango pudding sticky rice spring rolls. Formerly Darlings Supper Club, we’re super stoked this place has found a home in Northbridge!
#7 Little Way
Nedlands
Housed in a beautiful heritage building in Nedlands, Little Way is the perfect spot to head when you’re feeling like anything at all. Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, the menu features good, honest food like crumbed squid rings with avocado, mint and lime mayo, paella arancini, pizzas and WA grass-fed beef cheeks with fettuccine, Swiss brown mushrooms and thyme. Little Way have got coffee cravings covered with beans from Loaded Coffee and a very extensive list of boozy bevvies.
#8 ChiCho Gelato
Northbridge
After wheeling their adorable gelato carts around the market scene for several years, ChiCho Gelato have set up shop in Northbridge. Gelato lovers can expect quirky, delicious flavours—like lavender honeycomb, jalapeno pineapple and matcha green tea with caramelised white chocolate—a free flowing chocolate tap and seasonal specials like the Chicho Panino (gelato sandwich). There will be 20 rotating flavours and Chicho insist on you sampling a few before making the call—hells yeah!
#9 Theo & Co.
Leederville
After opening the East Victoria Park location early last year, Perth’s pizza king, Theo Kalogeracos, is back in business in Leederville with his new business venture, Theo & Co. You can expect the same quality of pizzas as the original Little Caesars Pizzeria and a whole lot of amazing new creations. We are lusting so hard over the amazeballs Nonna’s Special—in-house Italian meatballs with a rich tomato sauce, mozzarella, parmesan and parsley—and the Los Pollos Hermanos—a roasted red capsicum sauce with mozzarella, crunchy battered chicken, avocado, red onion, mayo and specialty blue salt (which I think is actually crack, it’s super addictive).
#10 Pearth Organic Kitchen
West Leederville
Perth’s newest healthy cafe, Pearth Organic Kitchen in West Leederville already has health nuts in a spin! Serving breakfast and lunch on the daily, the food Pearth whip up is organic or locally sourced and free from processed and refined nasties. We’ve tried the Pearthect Parmesan Eggs—organic scrambled parmesan eggs, avocado, spinach, tomatoes and crusty sourdough bread—and the Acai Smoothie Bowl topped with fruit and granola made in-house. It’s the kind of food that you feel good about yourself for eating. Pearth also serve coffee, matcha and chai lattes, cold-drip coffee, kombucha, juices and smoothies.
#11 The Globe
Perth
The newest restaurant/bar in the 140 precinct, The Globe’s menu features fresh, seasonal and boutique ingredients. Executive Chef, Graham Arthur, recommends the roasted pork belly and crab eclairs which are served in the lane. The wine and cocktail list have been well designed to complement the food offerings and we’ve been told there are more than 25 beers on tap!
#12 Spadille Garage
West Perth
What do you get when you combine a love of motorcycles with a coffee shop? Spadille Garage in West Perth! A multi-purpose space, Spadille serve coffee, bagels, sandwiches and other light snacks. The space also encompasses a store selling moto-fashion and accessories and men’s grooming products, a communal garage and event space. It’s really just the ultimate man-cave.
#13 Satchmo Cafe
North Perth
We’re loving the menu at North Perth newbie, Satchmo Cafe. Featuring Jewish dishes and New York deli-style food like Mammas Matzo Ball Soup, Blueberry Cheese Blintz and bagels galore—going hungry isn’t an option at Satchmo. They’re also serving a pretty specky-looking New Orleans style house beans with speck squares, fried egg, parmesan wafer and toasted soldiers. Don’t forget to grab some freshly baked bagels on the way out.
#14 Altruist Specialty Coffee Brewers
Mount Hawthorn
Mount Hawthorn’s newest shining star, Altruist Specialty Coffee Brewers do exactly as their name says—specialty coffee—beans and brewing process included. The cute little cafe features modern/industrial furniture with bright pops of colour and a whole lot of light. It’s also the only place in Perth that we know of which serves eggs benny in a ciabatta roll, which we think could be the new bacon and egg sanga! Altruist also serve tasty home-made goodies like banana bread and chocolate and caramel muffins, as well as Glazed and Confused doughnuts. Bonus: you can text in your coffee orders.
#15 Bluzou Bar
Perth
Officially opening in two weeks in the basement at 26 Queen Street, Bluzou Bar is Perth’s first vodka bar. Word on the street is they’ll be pouring a massive range of vodkas, house-made infusions, eclectic cocktails as well as tasty canapés. For those of us that require a bit of booze to get through the work day, Bluzou will be open for lunch from 9 February. Don’t worry, we won’t tell your boss!
#16 The Modern Eatery
Mount Lawley
This Freo fave has opened up a sister restaurant in Mount Lawley and we are excited. Specialising in Aburi sushi—a style where the fish is partially cooked with a blow torch and partially raw, resulting in a subtle buttery and smokey flavour—The Modern Eatery is a sleek and stylish Japanese restaurant. You’ll want to get in quick and try their tasty summer menu which features juicy katsu with deep fried minced pork beef and vegetables served with mayo and tonkatsu sauce, smokey apple salad with lotus chips and grilled chicken with sesame seeds, mayo and aburi sauce.
