If you’re keen to beautify a little, but don’t want to hurt the environment, we’ve got you covered. Perth has a plethora of salons committed to sustainability and minimising their environmental footprint, so we’ve gone ahead and wrapped up some of the absolute best. If you’re looking for a salon closer to you, we suggest using the Sustainable Salons directory, an organisation committed to reducing waste within the industry.
Led by experienced blonde colourist Grace Clayton, Los Pastel is one Perth's most trusted names for light-haired babes. It's also one of the few places of its calibre that has kept the space small and service super personal—they pride themselves on creating a non-salon experience—so you feel well looked after from start to finish. Over the last year the salon's Cali-cool vibes has been met with a similar LA-level focus on sustainability. You'll pay that lil extra Green Fee but considering they've commited to recycling 95% of all their waste—foils, plastic, hair, chemicals—we don't really mind.
Tao Of Hair
This King Street salon is making waves in its effort to become a completely sustainable salon. All the waste and tools from their salon—even hair clippings—are being recycled. They’ve tacked on a $2 Green Fee to each visit, but it’s going to a good cause: helping provide meals to those in need. Need to get a dye job done? A full head of foils goes towards providing a meal to those who go hungry, so you can be safe knowing that your hair will look stunning, and you’re helping others, and the planet.
Opening in February this year, Bigoudee Coiffure is using OWay—the world's first professional organic hair colour and skincare line. OWay uses biodynamic ingredients, fair trade networks, sustainable development and green chemistry to produce all their products, so you can feel good about colouring your hair here. The team at Bigoudee make every effort to cut back on waste—even their taps are fitted with filters to reduce water usage for up to 40%—and they recycle what they can't make do without. They even have a plastic-free refill station so you can bring back your glass bottles and re-fill your hair care.
Penny & Peach
Penny and Peach is Perth’s most colourful salon, inside and out, and it’s making a colourful contribution to sustaining our planet. They recycle all salon materials and use haircare line Kevin Murphy, which is bottled in recycled plastic. Plus, all hair colours are ammonia free.
East Fremantle and Dalkeith
This blonde bombshell of a salon is helping the planet one trim at a time. They recycle all their materials to keep them out of the ocean, and any leftover chemicals and grey water are collected and used for making roads. If you’ve ever wanted to become a blonde, now’s the time, because you’ll be saving the environment with your awesome hair.
Chilli Couture is big on helping the environment. They recycle 95% of their waste, and all of their products are vegan, cruelty and chemical free. Instead of using traditional aluminium foil, they use 100% recycled foil or RockFoil, which is completely biodegradable and produced sans chemicals. On top of this, the colours they use by Original & Mineral and Natulique are free of nasty chemicals and carcinogens, are biodegradable and come in recycled recyclable packaging.
Subiaco and Perth
Circles of Subiaco and Circles on Fitzgerald are two sustainable salons working towards benefitting the community and the environment. They recycle their plastic bags and packaging and repurpose their old tools; the proceeds from recycling go directly to community organisations and charities that work towards making our planet and environment even better. In case you're looking for another reason to pay them a visit, they recently did Katherine Langford's (13 Reasons Why) hair and it looks stunning.
Djurra Lifestyle Salon
Djurra is all about nature, especially natural products; they only use the naturally derived products from Aveda. They're also part of the Sustainable Salons program and recycle 95% of their waste. Even your hair is swept up and sent to help clean up oil spills or used to make wigs. As well as getting a stunning hairdo, treat yourself to a Sensory Journey head massage, where the professionals at Djurra will treat your hair with environmentally friendly essential oils.
Pierrots Hair Studio
Mount Lawley and Kalamunda
Award-winning hair salon Pierrots Hair Studio is another huge Aveda supporter. Part of the Sustainable Salons network, the products used are cruelty-free and the packaging is 100% recyclable, made with power generated from wind farms. Who knew getting your hair done would help save the planet?
House Of Haylo
House of Haylo only uses the best products for its clients, and that includes the environment too. They’ve partnered with Natulique, Davroe and Bhave to bring you the best sustainable hair colours and treatments. The products are natural, made with raw ingredients, are free of the nasty chemicals and completely vegan and cruelty-free.
Arcorace Hair & Beauty
The team at Arcorace is focused on making sure you look your best without harming the environment. Whether it's just a haircut or getting you ready for your big day, they’ve got you covered, and their eco-friendly products are keeping the environment looking its best too.
