Immersive exhibitions have been all the rage for a while now in places like New York and London, but we haven't seen too many in Perth—until now.
From 18 January until 17 February 2019, Metro City will become a four-level temple dedicated to surrealist Salvador Dali with the exhibition DALI LAND. The exhibition will feature more than 200 of Dali's works, from drawings, sculptures and photography to film, graphics and virtual reality.
You'll also be able to step into the Dada Cinema—which will be showing the most influential surrealist films by the likes of Maya Deren, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Hans Richter, Ferdinand Leger and plenty more—or take a ride through the Dreams of Dali virtual reality experience to get a glimpse of some of Dali's most fascinating visions.
The site will also be home to a secondary exhibition, Unconscious Contemporary, which will showcase the work of early surrealists artists like Max Ernst, Andre Masson, Jean Cocteau, Andre Breton and Man Ray as well as some of our favourite contemporary artists—Stormie Mills, Kyle Hughes-Odgers, Alex Maciver, Ben Juniper, Steve Browne, Robert Buratti and Katie Moore—not to mention films from Alex Proyas and photography from the award-winning Thor Engelstad.
As if all that wasn't enough, Dali Land will also be home to a huge array of Fringe events. On their opening night, they'll be throwing The Surrealist Ball which will give you a first look at the exhibition, plus entertainment, delicious eats, drinks and debauchery. They'll also play host to everyone's favourite Fringe show, Club Briefs, and they have teamed up with the Briefs Factory to bring us Dali After Dark—an immersive choose-your-own-adventure style trip through the exhibition which we're willing to bet will be just a little bit naughty.
There will also be Dali Dinners which will mimic the crazy dinner parties Dali himself hosted back in the 70s, and the team will be partnering with local Northbridge restaurants so you can expect crazy but mouth-watering meals. If you want to party on after all of this, The Salon Bar will be setting up shop on the rooftop and staying open until 5am each morning. Yes, 5am—that's not a typo. Think live music, burlesque, comedy and creative cocktails and you're on the right track.
But wait, we've saved the best for last. The one and only Lily Allen will also be taking over DALI LAND for one night on 12 February for her first Perth show in four years! She's in town to promote her new record No Shame and let's just say you'd be an absolute fool to miss this one, so book your tickets here.
