If you’ve been to the shops recently, or walked past literally any newsstand, you’ll be well aware that the nation is currently being terrorised by a bout of spiked strawberries.
But the victims of the Strawberry Prick aren’t just the innocent shoppers, they’re the innocent farmers too. This recent scourge of contamination has seen prices and demand plummet in a move that’s wreaking havoc on local suppliers.
So, in a move akin to the overwhelmingly popular ‘Parma for a Farmer’, a bunch of Perth cafes and restaurants are standing very firmly in solidarity with our nation’s growers and offering a bunch of strawberry-themed dishes for widespread enjoyment.
Check 'em out this weekend and throw your support behind the hardworking farmers that keep us fed.
Cott & Co
With the sun FINALLY out to play, why not go coastal and head to Cott & Co? The latest star added to their menu features local strawberries at work in a strawberry and goat curd bavarois, with burnt butter sponge and fresh basil. But don’t dawdle, these bad boys are only available for the next two weeks.
Want to try something a little savoury with your strawberries? Hit up Young George where you can start off with a halloumi (already YES) with strawberries, peas, Aleppo pepper and agave. While you’re in the mood, double up with even more strawberries in their their ginger bread, strawberry sorbet, macerated strawberries and white chocolate sauce (drool).
For the next two weeks Must Winebar is also getting in on all of the strawberry action and we are oh-so-glad they did, because now that we’ve been introduced to the amazingness that is their ice pine nut parfait with local strawberries, lemon jam and almond crisp there’s no going back.
Bib & Tucker
Bib & Tucker’s dessert menu will be seriously amped for the next five days as they showcase the amazing strawberry, with all profits flowing straight back to the local growers. Expect to see such delights as a deconstructed strawberry cheesecake, and their strawberry and elderflower sorbet with prosecco-poached strawberries and pistachio crumb.
All the outlets and lounges at RAC Arena are getting in on the strawberry action, featuring an assortment of strawberry-based delights at every event until the end of October. 18 kilos of the freshest Wanneroo strawberries will be brought in daily to make all kinds of deliciousness including classics like fresh strawberries and cream, and more indulgent stuff like strawberry rocky road dessert pizza and strawberry waffles. If you love a drink (or three) while you’re watching a show, RAC has, of course, got you covered with cocktails and mocktails featuring our red berried friend. But if you’re a gin lover (like me) your first call will be the strawberry pink gin smash.
Bringing a Mexican flair to the humble strawberry el Publico will be offering a FREE strawberry dessert to all customers this weekend only. Yep, that’s a completely, 100% free serve of strawberries with no strings and no conditions, just pure and delicious strawberries.
Who doesn’t love a good strawberry pancake? Little Lefroy’s will be serving up strawberry pancakes all week to support our local growers, giving us the magical ability to support the farmers AND have dessert for breakfast in one bite. Hurry though, this offer is only good for the week.
The Fremantle Cappuccino Strip
Fremantle will become strawberry central this Sunday, holding a mouth-watering mini festival dedicated to the deliciousness that is the delicious strawberry. Local restaurants and cafes will be banding together to create strawberry-inspired dishes, and give away the juicy berries for FREE. So why not celebrate the Eagles win (of course) and have your Sunday cappuccino with a side of something strawberry-centric? With a range of family-friendly activities including face painting, live music and more, head down to Fremantle and end your weekend right.
Strawberry Sunday is on this Sunday from 12 noon until 3pm. Click here for all the juicy info.
