In between scoffing the delectable wine, cheese and chocolate our South West region is famous for, zone in on the host of amazing healthy spots when your tummy is requesting something nourishing. Life is all about balance, right? So when you need a super healthy breakfast, lunch or massive veggie-packed juice, we’ve got you covered.
Rivive Health Food
Once you’ve ogled Rivive’s impressive organic dry goods and beauty selection, head to the back of the store where the tiny kitchen pumps out some of the best tempeh and sesame burgers around (word to the wise, get there early if you have a hankering because they sell out). If you do miss out (look, we warned you), the vegan pies and fresh juices will have your tummy singing, too.
Black Sheep Deli
While we’re all for a little tooth ache courtesy of Candy Cow, across Bussell Highway the unassuming Black Sheep provides the perfect remedy for your sugar high. This is the place to stop for a healthy lunch with huge bowls of freshly made salad that are all the colours of the rainbow, housemade sushi and veggie-packed wraps. Wash them down with a big glass of tasty probiotics in the form of locally made kombucha from Augusta’s Alkomy.
Wild And Woods
Despite the recent change in owners, Wild and Woods has retained the amazing wraps crammed with salad and proteins such as falafel, fish or Mexican chicken. There's acai and smoothie bowls or chia pudding for breakfast, superfood salads to keep the wraps company in the lunch cabinet and plenty of raw treats (the avocado chocolate mousse… do it) if you fancy a sweet somethin’ to follow. The mouth-watering cabinet makes it so tricky to choose, so you may as well grab a few things to take away and call it a picnic dinner at one of the nearby beaches. You’re welcome.
Blue Ginger Fine Foods
Blue Ginger is a little off the beaten track, so you have to divert from Bussell Highway but it will be worth it, little health lovers, we promise. The store section is a treasure trove of organic goodies that has pretty much anything your tummy or tastebuds have been craving since you overdosed at Temper Temper Fine Chocolate around the corner (or was that just us? #chocaholics #cantstopwontstop). This cafe whips up an impressive selection of whole foods with options for most dietary issues.
Check out surfers’ hang-out Shaana Cafe which pumps out the most delicious juices and smoothies, and plenty of nourishing eats to fuel you up post surf or post checking out surf(ers). If you’ve overdone the wineries, try the best morning-after hangover cure and dunk yourself in the ocean via the glorious reef-protected Yallingup beach before knocking back a Shaana green smoothie.
Mana Kai Cafe
It seems like just yesterday you could only get a pie or an oily focaccia when lunching in Busso. Those times are changin' as the once sleepy town has welcomed a host of culinary delights like Mana Kai, which offers an excellent selection of vegetarian food (and gluten-free peeps get a good look in here, too). Even kiddies can go beyond the usual ham and cheese toastie with a sensational kids plate packed with healthy goodies.
Margaret River Juice Company
Up the top end of the Bussell Highway cafe strip (fight the sugar devil on your shoulder urging you to visit next door’s Fudge Factory…or visit both and call it #balance) is a little haven of health food in the form of smoothies, raw lunches, raw treats and of course, plenty of juices. Dose yourself up on pure, tasty nourishment at Margaret River Juice Company.
Kona Joe's Health Shack
Various South West locations
Sister duo Kelly and Janelle are living their dream, running this adorable food truck selling mouth-watering acai bowls (seriously, the best I've tried in WA—the noises I made while shovelling in spoonfuls drew raised eyebrows from my husband and I didn't care one bit), Cocowhip and coffee from various beachy locations. Regularly found at Dunsborough foreshore, Meelup Beach and Yallingup Beach, follow up an ocean dip with a bowl of healthy heaven from Kona Joe's then help me start a petition to get a van up in Perth so I can eat one erry day.
