Responsible for curing hunger, the common cold* and a broken heart, chilli mussels are as functional as they are delicious.

What could be better than a saucy mix of tomato, garlic and chilli, paired with some of the most delicious molluscs known to man (sorry oysters)? Absolutely nothing. Chilli mussels are basically pasta soup sans the carbs, so you don’t have to feel bad about reaching for that extra slice of bread to mop everything up with.

And when it comes to the best chilli mussels in Perth, we know where to find them.

Clancy’s Fish Pub

Applecross

Not only is Clancy’s Fish Pub at Canning Bridge home to a killer quiz night on a Monday, they also dish up some of the best chilli mussels we’ve had the pleasure of tasting. The perfect combination of heat and acidity, pop out the mussels one by one and eat this baby like a soup, with some sourdough bread of course.

Little Creatures

Fremantle

Little Creatures can do no wrong, especially when it comes to their chilli mussels. Order some frites and have fun dunking them into the taste bud tingling sauce, then cool that mouth down with a pale ale or two.

Threecoins Italian Trattoria

Mount Lawley

We love everything that authentic Italian restaurant Threecoins churns out, and their chilli mussels are no exception. Served with grilled bread, eating these little molluscs is pure bliss.

Embers Wood Fired

Gooseberry Hill

Nestled into leafy Gooseberry Hill, Embers’ chilli mussels are worth the trek. Served mild, medium or hot in a garlic and chilli Napolitana sauce, even those with the biggest chilli phobia will love these.

Spritz Spizzicheria

Mount Hawthorn

If you thought it was all about the Aperol Spritz at Spritz Spizzicheria, you thought wrong. Their chilli mussels are the business. Squeeze some lemon on that shiz and you will never look back. And get a spritz too, you won’t regret it.

Il Ciao

Applecross

When the chilli mussels craving hits, make the trek to Applecross’s Il Ciao for a bowl of spicy tomato goodness. Tossed with garlic, chilli, white wine and tomato sauce, you’ll be licking the bowl clean and planning your next trip back before you know it.

Pappagallo

Leederville

The impepata di cozze from Pappagallo are the bees knees. Fresh mussels cooked in white wine, garlic and chilli in a light tomato sauce. Order some pizzas and mop up the rest of the juices with your crusts. Genius!

Benny’s

Fremantle

Chilli mussels, fresh, cooked in white wine, chilli, garlic and tomato sugo—with dishes like that, it’s no wonder Benny’s is still going strong after all these years. Served with fresh bread, be sure to order a Nutella martini while you’re there!

Siena’s

Leederville

Be quick, the chilli mussels from Siena’s (aka everyone’s old favourite Italian joint in Leederville) always sell out fast, which is not surprising because, you guessed it, they’re tasty AF.

Bathers Beach House

Fremantle

So you’ll have to order the entire seafood board at Bathers Beach House to get a taste of their chilli mussels, but they’re worth it. Cooked in chilli and cider, you’ll be begging the crew here to make them a menu item all on their own.
