It took several arduous weeks of sipping brews and chatting to the city's top baristas to find Perth's best coffee but the hyper-caffeination was worth it, guys. Not only was I super impressed by the passion and knowledge that is fuelling Perth’s love affair with the bean, but I also found cafés where customer service is as important as the coffee. Who woulda thunk! Some of the best coffee in Perth comes from your old faves, but there are loads of new and exciting joints too - which explains the evolving trend towards coffee specialisation. Not sure which single origin to choose or whether your black coffee should be filtered? Ask for advice from your friendly baristas - the guys and gals behind the counters of Perth's best coffee joints - who all really, really, really love to talk about coffee.
So withour further ado, we present to you 15 of the best cafes to find Perth's best coffee.
Typika Artisan Roasters
Stephen Kenyon has a strong vision for the brew he serves at Perth cafe Typika, and a gleaming in-house roastery allows him to control the coffee-making process from raw bean to final product. Offering a unique variety of fantastic in-house blends and single origin espresso drinks under the Typika brand, Kenyon also supplies custom-roast blends to a bunch of other cafes around town. Great coffee, a spacious, funky interior, an array of delicious breakfast and lunch dishes, and the chance to see the roastery in operation three days a week - what’s not to love!
Three former employees of WA-based Five Senses Roasters showcase their love of speciality coffee at this quirky and cute Perth cafe. The white and turquoise interior of Pixel Espresso perfectly showcases the white Synesso espresso machine and matching grinders, and filter lovers can choose from the reasonably priced batch brew, fresh filtered pour overs, or a cold brew. Mano a Mano, Proud Mary, Seven Seeds and of course Five Senses are amongst the roasters supplying this great new addition to Oxford Street in Leederville.
Perth cafe Red Cherries opened in Freo earlier this year and is a collaboration between Tim Lock, owner of Fremantle Markets’ highly regarded Black Cherries Espresso, and former Toby’s Estate Master Roaster, Karim Decima. The crew here roast their own beans and sell them under the Atlas brand. They also offer an impressive variety of unique blends, single origins and filters from other hand-picked roasters. The décor is minimalist and elegant, a combination of white and timber with beautiful murals on the walls. This is the future of coffee, people!
Felix & Co.
A multi-roaster specialty coffee bar that sets itself apart when it comes to product quality, quantity and diversity, Felix & Co is a hip little Perth cafe serving an eclectic crowd in Nedlands. It offers two or three seasonal blends per week, three espresso and two cold brew offerings daily, as well as an every changing menu of filter offerings. Beans are sourced from a plethora of roasters including WA-based Mano a Mano and Loaded, and Seven Seeds, Code Black, and Artificer from over East.
Blink Coffee Bar
A traditional espresso bar and a Fremantle favourite, Perth cafe Blink is small on space but massive on hospitality. Owner Sergio’s love of coffee was fostered by his Italian parents, and he is passionate about tailoring every cup to his customer’s desired brew, as long as it starts with two shots of locally-roasted Crema espresso. There is a lovely community feel to Blink with Sergio and his baristas often working at a frenetic pace to keep up with demand, and impressively remembering their regular customers’ names and beverages of choice.
When midwife Penny Leith isn’t delivering babies, she’s helping her husband Rick deliver great coffee at Perth cafe Spring Espresso. Serving up a custom-made three bean blend from Five Senses, as well as two seasonal single origins, Spring also offers a cold drip filter, served with a choice of still or sparkling water. A favourite of coffee-loving cyclists who hang out post-ride as early as 6AM, you most certainly don’t have to wear lycra to enjoy Spring’s great service, knowledgeable staff and great-tasting coffee. Thanks goodness for that.
Architects & Heroes
A mission to deliver Perth’s best coffee, alongside an impressive food menu, has made Perth cafe Architects & Heroes a Subiaco favourite. Perth born and raised Ronald Ngo spent almost a decade as a roaster and trainer in Melbourne before relocating west with his wife Lyly. She is the coffee architect behind the scenes, Ronald and his baristas are the heroes doling out top notch coffee from a menu that offers their custom ‘Angels of Taste’ blend, six single origin choices, and four or five filter options, all from reputable Melbourne-based Code Black Roasters. A tasting flight of three espressos is perfect for coffee connoisseurs - or the indecisive.
Serving coffee from Five Senses and blended to her own recipe, Hyeran Lee’s new Perth cafe has only been on the Northbridge cafe scene a sort time but it’s already a favourite with local office workers. Flo offers two single origin espressos, and three filters, as well as a menu of Korean street food and pastry treats. Following the trend for minimalism, the interior, which Lee designed and built herself, gets plenty of natural light, and offers a cosy respite from the modern, concrete landscape of the street.
Sprolo Speciality Coffee
What do you get when you combine espresso and the much hash-tagged acronym YOLO? Why SPROLO of course, a Perth coffee haven on Canning Highway, delivering the freshest caffeine south of the river thanks to in-house roasting by Blacklist Coffee Roasters. Award-winning baristas, a big open space with plenty of natural light, and an extensive choice of both espresso and filter coffees, combine to make Sprolo one of Perth’s best coffee hang-outs.
Tucked into an arcade on Beaufort Street, Perth cafe Bossman offers a low-lit retreat from the bustle and noise of Beaufort Street. Espresso drinks are made with either the Bossman blend or a rotating single origin, and filter coffee is created using a French Press; all from Twin Peaks, a local roaster with whom the owner, Daniel Cleary, collaborates closely. The interior has an old school recording studio theme with cherry wood furniture, cymbal-light fixtures, and old speakers as display shelving. A sister outlet called Boss Mama, owned by Twin Peaks roaster Tom Greene, serves up the same fabulous coffee for takeaway from a window booth on Milligan Street in the CBD.
La Veen Coffee & Kitchen
Located in a heritage building, the fit-out at Perth cafe La Veen Coffee & Kitchen is modern against a backdrop of exposed brick and wooden flooring. Quality is king here and there is an impressive choice of brewing systems including Hario, Kalita and Marco. The house blend is from Five Senses, and there is a selection of filter coffees, including a cold brew and a batch brew, from Proud Mary, Seven Seeds and Market Lane, among others. The focus is on excellence, while the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.
Addison & Steele
When they opened Perth cafe Standing Room Only Espresso Bar in the CBD in 2012, Michael Munroe and his family were determined to put Perth on the world coffee map. While still serving up world-class coffee at the Piccadilly Mall outlet, the Munroes introduced the art of brewing to North Perth in the form of a spacious cafe, Addison & Steele. The Fitzgerald Street outlet has a Filter Coffee Bar and a custom Slayer Espresso machine. Beans are sourced from Melbourne-based Small Batch Coffee Roasters.
Max & Sons
From the father/son team that set up Perth cafe Mo Espresso in Trinity Arcade, Max & Sons is a corner café in the 140 William precinct, offering up sandwiches, pastries and doughnuts, and of course top quality coffee. Five Senses, Seven Seeds, Market Lane and Loaded all feature on the menu, that covers the espresso and filter caffeine fixes, at this welcome new addition to Perth CBD coffee scene.
Perth cafe Small Print is an in-house roastery, bakery and cafe offering quality coffee with the same dedication as a great chef preparing gourmet food. Beans sourced from all over the world for their quality and unique flavours are roasted on-site by Melbourne-based Dukes Coffee Roasters. A rotating menu of origin specific coffees, Dukes Seasonal Espresso Blend, and a choice of filter coffees prepared using various methods, may present a dilemma to the indecisive but knowledgeable staff are always on-hand to direct you towards your optimum caffeine fix.
The Daily Espresso
Perth cafe The Daily Espresso is a western suburb favourite, brewing up top notch espresso and filter coffees from roasters such as Proud Mary and Loaded. The place is always crazy busy so our tip is to get your brew to takeaway. The owners have expanded operations to the other side of the railway tracks in the former location of The Dancing Goat. They’ve called the second outlet The Other Side (duh!) and it serves up the same great coffee.
