Your Ultimate Summer Playlist

By Phoebe Grealy - 17 Dec 2015

What’s summer without a banging summer soundtrack?

You need tunes to hit the beach, to work out early morning, to get ready for a night of cocktails and to recover the next day from said cocktails.

We’ve partnered with Bose to bring you the summer playlists from some of Australia’s coolest kids: the sisters behind Sydney fashion label macgraw, world beating electronica band mates Atlas Bound, and kick ass Judo Black Belt, Diego Barreto.

They take us through their summer essentials, how they’ll be spending the sunshine months, their fave hangouts and the beats they’ll be playing to get pumped up to make the most of the Aussie summer—it’s like sunshine for your eardrums.

Sydney sisters Beth and Tessa MacGraw launched the luxe macgraw label in 2012 and have been on a fast trajectory to the top, showing at the 2015 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week and featuring in Vogue magazine. The sisters take us through their chic must-dos in their hometown of Sydney and the summer tunes they’ll be listening when creating their collections and kicking back with summer cocktails.

What do you do to get into the zone and get the creativity flowing?

Beth - Depending on the time of day we would either brew a pot of herbal tea or pour a glass of prosecco and put on a chilled out playlist and a candle. The most important thing for me is to step far away from the computer!

What keeps you motivated to be better and keep striving?

Tessa - Having a fashion label means many late nights and hard work but there is nothing quite like seeing something you have created from scratch out there getting positive attention on an international stage. It’s pretty addictive.

What's your fave summer spot in your city?

Beth - The Boathouse in Palm Beach.

What's your favourite thing about summer?

Tessa - Paddle boarding at Palmy.

Beth - The smell of Jasmine and freshly cut grass.

Favourite summer beverage?

Beth - Icy cold coconut water fresh from the coconut.

What's your must have summer accessory?

Tessa- Sunnies. I have a bit of a problem, The collection is getting a bit out of hand!

What's your gadget obsession?

Beth - My beautiful white Bose Noise Cancelling headphones. I can’t fly without them.

What's one thing no one knows about you?

Beth - I like taking pictures and would have probably been a photographer if this gig didn’t work out.

Tess - I can’t handle cherries on clothes.

Sydney/LA-based Atlas Bound aka Adrian Kalcic and Will Taylor are making big waves in the music scene. After growing up together on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the pair have developed a future folk sound all their own—the duo’s tunes have attracted over a million plays online. We got the goss on everything they’ll be doing and playing this summer to get them ready to work hard and play hard.

What do you do to get into the zone and get the creativity flowing?

We like to go away and get out of town as much as we can. New environments inspire new ways of thinking about things, especially music.

What keeps you motivated to be better and keep striving?

It doesn't take much motivation to continue doing what we love every day, but travelling the world making music is a real incentive. Aspirations aside though, we both just enjoy doing what we do and would probably do it in our spare time even if it wasn't a career option.

What's your fave summer spot in your city?

Castle Rock Beach in Balgowlah; when the sun is out there aren’t many places we would rather be.

What's your favourite thing about summer?

Summer seems to be when Australia comes into its own. There is nothing in the world quite like the vibe of a small beachside town in December. We love the fact that a whole new breed of festivals are starting up and succeeding in this kind of setting as well.

Favourite summer beverage?

Cold drip coffee in the morning makes for a good day.

What's your must have summer accessory?

Bose wireless speakers come with us wherever we may go, whether it be the beach or sitting on the dash if we road trip up north.

What’s your gadget obsession?

We use an SSL 9000 series desk to mix our stuff on. We are pretty obsessed with them, and everything has to go through one before it’s released. We are pretty confident we have worked on every available desk in Sydney.

What’s something no one knows about you?

Our drummer has never touched a real drum kit!

Brazilian Judo champion Diego Barreto now calls Australia home and this Black Belt has one thing on his mind this summer: preparing for the Olympic Games. He tells us how he pumps up and keeps the good energy flowing in the summer months, and his fave ways to take a break when he’s not busting a move..

What do you do to get into the zone and get the creativity flowing?

I have only one thing on my mind when I get into the zone and that is to focus on qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. I always push myself to be better than I was yesterday and music is a key part of my preparation and training.

What keeps you motivated to be better and keep striving?

My motivation is my goal of qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro 2016. The fact that they are in my home country is another reason to train harder, continue improving my Judo techniques, and make my family proud.

What's your fave summer spot in your city?

In Australia, my favourite spot is anywhere near the ocean! Back home in Brazil, it is a small city beach called Guaruja, where I was born.

What's your favourite thing about summer?

Spending some downtime with my family, where we can all relax in the sunshine!

Favourite summer beverage?

There’s nothing as refreshing as lemonade with lots of ice!

What's your must have summer accessory?

The Aussie and Brazilian summer essentials are pretty much the same: sunglasses and thongs!

What's your gadget obsession?

My wireless Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker—it’s easy to take to training or to the beach!
