The 2014 Sydney Mardi Gras Parade

By Ellie Schneider - 03 Mar 2014

On Saturday night, Sydneysiders flocked to Oxford and Flinders Streets for a spectacular celebration of LGBTQI pride. Featuring 144 floats, and a half tonne of glitter, grey skies were never going to rain on this parade.

The theme for the 36th annual parade was "Kaleidoscope", a celebration of diversity, colour, love and life. As thousands of revellers donned their finest frocks, there was no shortage of rainbow flags, sequins and speedos.

The Dykes on Bikes convoy lead the celebrations, whilst Chief of the Parade was billed to The Pollys—Australia's largest and oldest gay and lesbian social group.

Several floats featured a menacing portrayal of Russian president Vladimir Putin in protest of anti-gay laws, hoping the statement would make news on the global stage.

Starlet Delta Goodrem performed on the massive Oral-B float, whist Baz Luhrmann, who designed the Strictly Ballroom-themed showcase performance, also took part in the parade.

The festivities continued in style at Mardi Gras extravaganza, The Party, headlined by LBGTQI icons including Tina Arena, Samantha Jade and 2014 official Mardi Gras ambassador, Courtney Act.

Renowned international DJs such as Kim Ann Foxman, Feral is Kinky and DJ Sveta propelled partygoers long into the morning.
