When we first heard Salaryman was launching Ramen Wars, like any normal ramen-enthusiast, we thought of soupy broth battlegrounds with noodles splattering left, right and centre. Chopstick swords. Bowl shields. And pork belly bombs firing into the open mouths of hungry soup soldiers, exploding with juicy, fatty flavours. Bullseye.
But that is not quite the case.
Instead, some of Sydney’s best chefs will go head-to-head to create the ultimate bowl of ramen in a modern day chef battle, a fellowship of the noodles. And for all of us sodium-starved, noodle-splashing slurpers who can’t finish a bowl without showering ourselves from head to toe in its golden, glossy elixir… well that’s the next best thing to a real-life food fight, isn’t it?
The low-key vibes of Albion Street’s Salaryman will transform into a ramen war zone where Head Chef Stephen Seckhold will release his pots to Silvereye’s Head Chef Sam Miller and Sous Chef Tom Halpin who will fight it out in the kitchen against John Javier of Master to create the perfect ramen (and we’re absolutely fine with that).
But don’t expect Noma veteran Sam Miller to be plating up your typical serving of pork bone, shellfish or onion, garlic and ginger stew. The Silvereye crew have plans to arm themselves with an intriguing smoked eel and ox tongue ramen combo.
Master’s Head Chef John Javier (formerly head chef at Quay and Momofuku) will stick closer to everything we love about the holy grail of all comfort dishes, enhancing traditional and oriental flavours.
Only one side can claim a delicious victory so volunteer yourself and friends as ramen tributes to sip, slurp and score noodles with a cocktail in hand and cheeky dessert on the house.
The war will break out on Sunday 15th May from 3pm - 8pm. Tickets will be $60 per person and include ramen, dessert and a cocktail. So, have your chopsticks at the ready because there can only be one bowl to rule them all.
