best outdoor cinemas sydney

Sydney isn’t short of an outdoor cinema and for that, we are totally and eternally grateful. Because sometimes, you need to step up your movie-watching game—life’s not always Netflix and chill.

We’re bringing you outdoor cinemas on the beach, screens against the harbour, deck chairs on massive lawns, giant beds with glowing lamps under the stairs, drive-ins, tents and cabanas, You know, just casually.

Here are the best outdoor cinemas in Sydney!

Moonlight Cinema

Centennial Park

It’s the OG of all outdoor movie-watching antics and let’s be honest, this one will never get old. There’s an LA food truck, candy shop and bar for all your tipple needs plus bean bags if you’re feeling a bit glam.

When: December to April

Mov’In Bed Open Air Cinema

Fox Studios

Big beds and even bigger flicks. Yep, that’s a winning combo for one helluva night. Think a 15-metre screen, glowing side tables next to all 150 outdoor beds and feeds to end all other feeds from Fratelli Fresh and Burger Project.

When: October to December

St George OpenAir Cinema

Mrs Macquarie Point

There’s really no topping the epic backdrop at St George OpenAir (you know, the harbour view kind) but there’s also no topping the super fine dining feast they’re plating up either. If you’re looking to mix some luxe movie feels with the vibes of schmancy dining, a 2000-seat grandstand and all the champagnes, wines, beers and ciders should just about do it.

When: January to February

American Express Openair Cinema

Bondi Beach

A giant inflatable screen, deckchairs, bean bags, blankets but most importantly, free ice-cream. Leading into the movies you’ll get to chill out to some live music before getting into new releases and retro classics. And we obvs don’t need to mention you’ll be kicking back right on Bondi Beach—because this is a list of Sydney’s best outdoor cinemas and this one is so damn Sydney it hurts.

When: January to February

Strathfield Movies In The Park

One word Sydney: free. The Strathfield Cinema are a glorious budget shenanigan playing the latest box office hits where all you need to do is pack the snacks and bring the picnic blanket. We’re sold!

When: September to April

Sunset Cinema

North Sydney

Everybody knows that Sunset Cinema shows up more than a good movie for all the film buffs out there. And it also stages up some pretty nifty sunsets too all thanks to its prime location of North Sydney Oval. Secure your spot on the lawn, grab the wine and ice-cream, and we’re pretty sure that’s your one-way ticket to pure adult happiness.

When: January to March

Sydney Hills Outdoor Cinema

The Hills

FYI, you can rent a tent. One of our personal faves, this one has deckchairs boasting all the comfort on the lawn. Bell tents featuring your own private butler. Cabanas with an actual king-sized bed inside. Forget about the fact Sydney Hills Outdoor Cinema is also showcasing the latest flicks, this is comfort and living on a whole other level.

When: January to February

Skyline Drive-In Cinema

When you’re after nostalgic feels (or a date-night to remember) and all the brownie points, drive-in cinemas should do the trick. Plus, there’s a ‘Happy Days’ style retro diner at this one with epic staple snacks including choc tops, hotdogs and milkshakes. Not only is this one of Sydney’s best outdoor cinemas, it’s a damn institution and open all year long.

When: All year

Or just stay in and watch every Christmas movie on Netflix.
