Art is all about expanding your horizons, right?
Well, forget all those inner city-bound art shows and schedule an art excursion to Blacktown in November for a place-based festival called RIGHT HERE. RIGHT NOW.
There's a lot of great art happenings in Sydney's West (Casula Powerhouse and Campbelltown Arts Centre host some of the coolest exhibitions year round). However, come November, the heart of Blacktown will be totally pulsing with performance, installation, music, film and food that celebrates the diversity of the neighborhood.
RIGHT HERE. RIGHT NOW is a 3.5-hour art explosion, presented by Urban Theatre Projects in partnership with Blacktown Arts. Hosted over nine nights in November, it features a feast, as well as five newly commissioned artworks made in collaboration with more than 25 young and emerging Western Sydney and internationally-based artists.
Known for highlighting the drama of the every day, SA-based multidisciplinary artist Meg Wilson collaborates with local Sydney artist Nicole Bakkarat to install eight giant trampolines in a site-specific installation and dance/acrobatic performance piece called Team Trampoline. Each one is woven from textiles and fabrics with the help of local residents and students.
The stuff of childhood dreams, these trampolines will buoy viewers with their beauty instead of their bounce.
Dedicated to the night-owls, the restless and the lonely-hearts among us, award-winning theatre director Roslyn Oades brings us The Nightline, an immersive audio-portrait of what happens in the wee hours. Tune in via headphones to experience a collection of late night calls made to an anonymous phone line over two years. The work unites forlorn voices in their shared experiences of worry and wonder. It’s an exclusive underground listening experience that even the larks can get in on.
And there’s more. RIGHT HERE.RIGHT NOW presents a dynamic program of art that explores personal stories within a universal context, to reflect on important issues unfolding in Australia and globally.
To top it all off, your ticket includes a group feast. Yep, once you've soaked up all that art, you'll get to gorge on local culinary delights from surrounding Persian, Ethiopian and Afghan restaurants. That’s a few of our November nights sorted. Tickets are available here.
