So somehow we’ve nearly hit 2015’s halfway point, which has many of us baffled, nervous and constantly exclaiming “WHERE DID THE YEAR GO?!” to anyone who will listen.
While we don’t actually know where the year went (we’ll hazard a guess that too much of it was spent eating our weight in carbs), we do know where you should be eating, drinking, splurging and partying this June. From quirky Newtown shopping, to a music festival where indie and hip hop collide, plus more dumplings than you can poke a chopstick at, this June is looking to be a good’un.
Here are our top 10 things to do in Sydney this June. Enjoy!
10. Go in on the wings at The Hayberry
We’re suckers for wings and burgers and the ones at new Sydney bar, The Hayberry, are some of the best we’ve had in a good while. The burgers come with waffle fries (yum!) and their signature buffalo wings are sticky, saucy and almost too delicious for words. This American style bar is ticking all the boxes when it comes to food, booze and good times, so do yourself a favour and head down there this June.
9. Check out Uptown @ Brewtown
Pick up a coffee and a brewnut from downstairs and head up the stairs to the aptly named Uptown @ Brewtown. Here you’ll find a collection of cute, cool, and quirky things sourced from local designers and independent labels. Whether you’re after a gift for a friend, looking for a lobster sweater (they have them!), or just want to treat yourself to a little somethin’ somethin’, then head upstairs to Uptown @ Brewtown.
8. Drink #allthewine at Barrel Bar & Dining
We love a new Sydney bar as much as the next guy, but Barrel Bar & Dining are doing things a little differently… and we love it. With beautiful and innovative modern Australian food and offering BYO wine from Sunday through Thursday (we know, a wine bar that lets you BYO?! Get outta town!), bring along a special bottle of wine and the guys will be able to recommend dishes to match. Brilliant! If you don’t BYO, that’s fine, Barrel Bar & Dining have an excellent selection of wines and cocktails to get you classily liquored up.
7. Aloha, Poke
What started as a market stall, Poke (pronounced poh-keh) has now set up permanent residence in the beachy suburb of Coogee. Serving up simple, tasty and healthy dishes inspired by Hawaii, poke literally means “to cut or slice in small pieces” in the native Hawaiian language. So, as you can imagine, much of the menu involves cubed salmon, tuna and seafood in delicious marinades. It’s fresh, fun, and we can’t get enough of it.
6. Winter is coming – Thredbo winter launch
All Game Of Thrones references aside, winter is well and truly coming which means a few things—warm jackets, constant complaining about the cold, aaaand the snow! Officially kicking off on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (6th – 8th June), and with snow already falling, this winter in Thredbo is going to be pretty freakin’ spectacular. Head down to the opening weekend for all manner of festivities including a free performance by The Preatures and Crooked Colours, hot pool parties, fireworks and their annual long lunch. All this actually makes us excited for the cooler months.
When: Saturday 6th June to Monday 8th June.
5. It’s a mysterious Middle Eastern feast at Thievery
From the gang behind Eat Art Truck comes new Sydney restaurant, Thievery. Grab a group of friends and get stuck into their devilishly good Middle Eastern inspired, hip hop named cocktails (hey there, Baby Got Baklava), before ordering up big from their food menu. Pro-tip: Order the kebabs—they’re nothing like your typical 2am kebab.
4. Become one with the dumpling at Luyu & Yum Yum
The question of “if you could only eat one thing for the rest of your life” is a hot topic in The Urban List offices. Interestingly (although not surprisingly), dumplings are often flagged as a potential “forever meal”. The dumplings at new Sydney dumpling kitchen Luyu & Yum Yum are the kind of dumplings you could see eating for the rest of your life. Oh, and don’t miss the hedgehog dumplings—they are almost too cute to eat. Almost.
3. Get your Italian on at Besser
With wine on tap, the famed “6pm risotto” and a crazy Italian atmosphere, new Sydney Italian restaurant, Besser has already made its mark on Crown Street in Surry Hills. Owned by the team behind one of Sydney’s best Italian restaurants, A Tavola, you know the food is going to be something to write home about (which it is). Head in for some bar snacks accompanied by a cocktail, or get cosy at one of the tables with a more substantial meal—either way you’ll be satisfied.
2. Come Together Festival
One of our favourite music festivals is back again! Come Together combines the best of Aussie hip hop and indie music over two glorious days where you can see the likes of Seth Sentry, Thundamentals, Ball Park Music and Horrorshow performing live. Held at Luna Park, your ticket will also get you access to unlimited rides over the weekend (although don’t spend too much time on the Rotor, unless you particularly want to lose your lunch).
When: Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June.
