In major news for your Monday morning, Sydney has just claimed the ultimate crown: our glorious, sparkly city will be hosting World Pride in 2023.
While Sydney already has one hell of an epic annual pride event (and one of the largest in the world, just FYI), come 2023, the 45th edition of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will be amped up massively by being hosted alongside World Pride.
That’s right, from February 24 through to March 4 2023, Sydney will be painted all sorts of rainbow for both World Pride and Mardi Gras. Huge.
While World Pride has floated around the world a bit, popping up in Rome, Jerusalem, Toronto, New York, London and Madrid, this will be the very first time World Pride has been hosted in the Southern Hemisphere. And Sydney won out by a majority of the InterPride committee too: owning 60 percent of the vote to host the 2023 event.
There’s been a lot of chat about Sydney becoming a global city and all the inroads we need to make to get there (like, getting rid of those super uncool lockout laws), but playing host to a massive international LGBTQI festival like World Pride definitely feels like a grand step forward. Yes, Sydney!
What: World Pride 2023
