14 Northside Venues To Check Out This Weekend

By Chloe Sputore - 25 Sep 2018

It’s not often you head to a shopping centre for its foodie offering, but if you’ve been to Westfield Chermside lately you’ll know it’s worth a visit for the food alone.

With something to suit all cravings, Chermside is jam packed with a huge selection of amazing eateries, as well as a nostalgia-inducing arcade.

From a Spanish tapas joint and yum cha hotspot to a cult burger house and smoothie bowl heaven, here are 14 Northside venues to check out this weekend.

If You’re Feeling Hungry

HUngry

Casa Cibo

Showcasing all the reasons why Italian food is always a fave with, well, everyone, Casa Cibo's menu is packed with traditional dishes (plus some modern takes that really steal the limelight!) that will transport you straight to the motherland. From pizza to pasta, charcuterie boards and meaty mains, there's something for everyone. Our picks have to be the rosso arancini balls, linguini vongole and their wood roasted porchetta (extra brownie points go to the limoncello tart—it's a devastatingly good twist on a classic).

Hermosa

It’s all about the Spanish tapas with a modern Aussie twist at Hermosa. We’re keen as beans to ty the paella bombas (a Spanish take on arancini) stuffed with chicken, chorizo, and San Simon cheese, as well as the seafood paella served single or share style. The drinks list is long—it’s a Spanish joint, go figure—and you’ll definitely want to save room for the churro ice cream sandwich, which is served with milk chocolate and hazelnut ice cream.

BiN 931

Long lunches, date nights and hungry tummies are all welcome at BiN 931. Order a round of cocktails as you decipher the menu, which features starters, shares, salads, pasta, seafood, slow cooked goodness and sides. Highlights include the baked eggplant with miso, sesame and parmesan, prawn and Moreton Bay bug agnolotti and prawn stuffed zucchini flowers.

Landmark Restaurant

Sunnybank’s most famous yum cha spot, Landmark Restaurant is now even easier to access on the northside. Can we get a hell yeah? Regulars will know the drill, but in case you’re a newbie the dim sum menu is where it’s at. Steamed pork buns are always a go-to, we could eat 1,000 pork dumplings and the salt and pepper squid hits the spot every time.

If You’re Feeling Fun

Fun

Tapworks

Tapworks lives up to its name, with 30 taps of craft beer offering thirst-quenchers for those on the quest for the perfect pub grub. Their burgers are next level; there’s the Mac Daddy with a big ol’ piece of fried and crumbed mac n cheese, accompanied by either wagyu beef, pulled pork or chilli con carne (veggos should not have to miss out on this), along with cheddar, lettuce, tomato and pickle. Honourable mention also goes to their American Cheeseburger, because they’ll even beer-match your cheese (cheddar = IPA; Monterey jack = pale ale or pilsner; or blue = IPA or pale ale) for the perfect burger experience. You can’t go without trying their chilli cheese fries either.

Fiery Deli

South American street food—don’t those four words get your taste buds tingling?! If not, Fiery Deli’s menu certainly will. Think everything from plantain chips and taco burgers to hearty Venezuelan plates filled with beans and rice and loaded nachos. Bonus—everything at Fiery Deli is gluten and dairy free!

The Bavarian

Perfectly positioned at the entrance of Westfield Chermside’s gorgeous outdoor precinct amidst tropical greenery and tinkling water features, The Bavarian‘s certainly not a bad spot to relax and enjoy that all-time Bavarian fave, the legendary schnitzel. There’s seven schnitty’s to choose from, plus The Schnitzelmeister—1kg of crispy crumbed veal —and loaded schnitzels. We’re feeling full just thinking about it.

Playtime

Fun is a given at Playtime, Chermside’s very own arcade. From high-tech games and simulators to carnival games and escape rooms, there are over 100 games to try at Playtime. Did we mention there are prizes? Yep, in true arcade fashion, Playtime’s got them and if you earn enough points they’re not half bad. Think: Apple Watches, tablets, 360 degree cameras and headphones. Time to start racking up those points!

If You’re Feeling Fresh

Fresh

Coco Bliss

100% sugar free, mostly raw, vegan and gluten free, Coco Bliss is a health food haven. Smoothie bowl aficionados will be in heaven with options like apple and cinnamon crumble, peanut butter and jelly, or snickers and pumpkin pie spice. For cooler days, the warm bircher muesli is worth a try and they’ve got four vegan toast toppers to choose from if carbs are your hero. Helloooo garlic mushrooms and avo.

Acai Brothers

With flavours like ‘Raw Nutella’, ‘Ain’t Nothin’ Butter’ (peanut butter of course) and ‘The Popeye’ which is full of spinach and all sorts of superfoods, you can enjoy Acai Brothers' bowls at any time of the day and be left feeling super healthy. Plus, they serve a great cup of coffee.

Le Bon Choix

A croissant is never a bad idea and the ones baked on the daily at Le Bon Choix do not disappoint. But it’s not just the fluffy crescent-shaped creations that we love from this joint, their doughnuts are just our kind of sweet treat. The fillings are kept simple (which we love) and include chocolate, jam, custard and the highly acclaimed caramel.

If You’re Feeling Lazy

Lazy

Roti & Buns

Too tired to make your own lunch? No problem, head to Roti & Buns and you’ll be treated to Malaysian and Hong Kong street food goodness. The peking duck crepes and fresh pan fried dumplings sound pretty damn good to us.

NYC Bagel Deli

NYC Bagel might just be the most universally appealing bagel joint in Brisbane. They’ve got options for all kinds of dietary requirements and flavours galore. The sweet tooth bagel with espresso butter, cream cheese, poached pear and berry compote is the perfect afternoon pick-me-up, while the Elvis “The King” is a naughty treat you have to experience once in your life. But tbqh, we’ll always have a soft spot for the classic cream cheese shmear.

Betty’s Burgers

Brisbane’s answer to Shake Shack, Betty’s Burgers is best known for its mouth-watering burgers and frozen custard ice cream. Betty's Burgers are made with a custom blend of the finest Australian beef, to give their burgers a taste like no other! With a classic Angus beef burger taking pride of place on the menu, you’ll also find pork belly, southern fried chicken and mushroom too. Top off your meal with their array of thick shakes, fries or onion rings and you're set for an epic meal.
