You guys, it’s nearly September. Before you freak the hell out about how we’re already more than half way through the year, let us distract you with some very, very exciting news: Brisbane Festival is back! Well, almost. Things kick off from September 9, and just quietly…we can’t freaking wait!
It brings with it a whole host of ridiculously cool shows to check out. To save you racking your brains trying to pick what to attend, we’ve teamed up with Brisbane Festival to put together our picks for the absolute best shows, events, and everything in between.
Prepare yourself for gigantic humans, your fave artists, and a whole heap of theatrical marvel. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Per Te
If you’re into awe and wonder, Per Te has your name written all over it. Brisbane Festival has snagged the Australian premiere, and you’re really not going to want to miss this next-level circus and physical theatre extravaganza. This one will really open your imagination.
Terror
Terror is inclusive, fourth-wall-breaking drama at its absolute finest. If ethical dilemmas, intense drama and performances that make you reevaluate everything are your jam, you’re going to want to book tickets to Terror, like, now. Terror follows the story of a fighter pilot who shoots down a hijacked passenger plane headed right for a packed football stadium—but did he do the right thing?! As the audience, it’s up to you to decide.
Orpheus
Orpheus is an effervescent feast suited perfectly to the old-world charm of The Tivoli. Take a trip back to 1930s Paris with heavy doses of Hot Club jazz, opera, and French chanson. Come early to enjoy free food and live music and all of the charm of 1930's Paris. P.S—on Friday and Saturday night, the cast of Orpheus will transform into Hot Club de Bulb and join guests for live music and dancing after the show.
Ali Barter
Ali Barter is literally taking over the Australian music scene. You’ll probably recognise her vocal and lyrical prowess from her feminist anthem “Girlie Bits” and you can be darn sure the rest of her album “A Suitable Girl” is packed full of equally epic bangers. If you can’t turn on the radio without singing along to her tunes, this is the show for you. And if you’ve never heard of her? Head to the show anyway because she will, without a doubt, blow you away.
Fun House
If Blanc De Blanc blew your theatre-loving mind at last year’s festival, then Fun House is going to rock your world, for real. Think exhilaration, exaltation, inflation, technicolour, and fun and you’re on the right track. Oh, and there’s a jumping castle involved, too. Did someone say fun?!
Little Creatures Live (It's Free!)
Expect an epic line-up of live music, comedians, and surprises at Little Creatures Live. With throwback Thursdays, Friday Fun Night, Sorority Saturdays, and Sunset Sundays there's literally something for everyone. Check out the full lineup and add it to your diary, stat.
Fantastic Planet
We’ve saved the best to last with Fantastic Planet. The light installation brings five giant humanoids (seriously, they’re 40 foot) to South Bank Parklands, Brisbane International Airport, and QPAC bringing a different kind of scenery to Brisbane. And yes, you 100% need to snap an Instagram picture with these bad boys—they’re epic!
