We Visit New Northside Cafe My Mistress

By Phoebe Lee - 28 Jan 2015

Sandgate Road doesn’t immediately conjure up images of peaceful relaxation and delicious breakfasts, but that’s exactly what the team at cheeky new cafe My Mistress are achieving. Branching out from the usual crowded breakfast hotspots, Natalie and Rihannon have set up a warm, inviting oasis of great coffee and fresh, simple food.

The cafe is incredibly spacious and earthy with an interior that’s easy-cool and not an over-the-top hipsters paradise. It’s a comfortable space with exposed brick walls, polished concrete floors, timber tables and a large wooden feature wall which will make you want to get lost in the woods. It’s a stripped-back take on modern interiors and, let me tell you, it’s a real winner.

Probably the first thing you notice about My Mistress, aside from her awesome appearance, is the genuine smiles and great customer service from the staff. As co-owner Rhiannon explains, “We hire people that are great at what they do and keep things simple.” It’s a strategy that’s clearly working wonders.

Owner of takeaway cafe She Bangs, just down the road, Rihannon and her partner Nat wanted to start a second cafe which focuses on sit-down meals. After building a loyal legion of coffee-addicted followers through their weekend market coffee-cart, Rhiannon and Nat decided it was time to open their dream cafe. My Mistress was unleashed on Brisbane!

The breakfast menu is simple and enticing, using fresh Queensland produce purchased from the same local markets the coffee cart operates from on weekends. This decision makes all the difference in the food, everything is full of flavour and natural goodness; something which is respected by the chefs.

Everything about this place is fun and laid back, including the menu. If you’re in the mood for something light consider a ‘Cheeky Fling’ including Middle Eastern fruit load with ricotta and seasonal compote, toasted banana bread with butter or an Acai bowl with seasonal market fruit.

After something a little more serious? Why not get involved in a ‘Main Affair’ including the aptly named Eggs Marilyn or Eggs Monica, both being a clear and hilarious reference to two women famous for their affairs.

Marilyn consists of organic caramelised onion and caraway rye, free range eggs, Margaret River smoked ham and wilted spinach topped with hollandaise sauce. Monica is a delicious combination of free range scrambled eggs on corn and zucchini fritters, blistered cherry tomatoes and seasoned avocado smash.

Other treats include the Rendesvouz; smashed avo on sourdough with feta, olive oil, fresh basil and lemon and the infamous Morning Glory; smoked bacon, free range egg, rocket, Swiss cheese, tomato relish and aioli on a toasted bagel.

The team use only free range eggs and offer a number of options for vegetarians, gluten dodgers and also cater to any other dietary requirements. Just let them know your jam and they’ll hook you up.

Aside from good grub the cafe also serves bold, creamy coffee using quality Genovese beans, it’s sure to get your synapses firing! There’s also a great range of freshly squeezed juices (no hidden nasties), seasonal smoothie, cold press coffee and a full range of Hepburn Drinks.

What makes My Mistress so great is the passion and energy that has gone into creating it. Nat and Rhiannon have built, designed and sourced everything from the ground up. As you look around the exposed pipe shelving, feature pendant lighting, mason-jar chandelier and interior styling keep in mind they’ve done it all!

With a great menu using quality, local ingredients, a comfortable, welcoming space, great staff and fantastic coffee, My Mistress is definitely on track to establishing itself as one of Brisbane’s best cafes. So, what are you waiting for? Get your bad self down to My Mistress and take her for a spin!
