It's not often we try a new venue that really blows us away. But Wild Canary — the brand new locavore haven paying homage to mother nature in beautiful Brookfield — is really something else.
Set in a lush garden paradise, the gorgeous 'botanical bistro' (the café extension of the amazing Brookfield Garden Centre) features a highly seasonal menu, which is inspired by the extensive kitchen gardens — you can feel (and taste!) the strong gardening focus in every dish. The food on offer is both contemporary and comforting, created by Chef Glen Barratt, previously of Restaurant II, the ingredients are sourced from Queensland finest local and regional producers, and every item on the impressive menu screams 'fresh, fresh, fresh'.
The breakfast line up is charmingly quaint, and decidedly hard to pick from. Light options like the watermelon and strawberry salad with rose water syrup and lemon, and the rice pudding with Mount Tambourine organic rhubarb and raspberries, sit comfortably next to hot smoked salmon, served on German dark rye toast with poached free range eggs, shaved fennel, French sorrel, fresh made salsa verde, grilled asparagus, and baby herbs (grown in their very own kitchen garden, naturally).
The lunch menu is just as appealing. Reuben sandwiches, Thai beef salad with mango, roast peanuts and hot and sour sauce, and the Chermoula Gold Coast tiger prawns with pineapple tabouli and lime, are just a few of the very tasty options.
If morning or afternoon tea is more your speed (and, really, you are in a garden, so you might as well get into the spirit of things) an in-house pastry chef is also on hand, whipping up delicious cakes, which go down very well with a cup of Wild Canary's Allpress coffee blend.
Wild Canary is also fully licensed, and has an impressive wine list, so we recommend dining with a designated driver. Groups bigger than six should call ahead to reserve themselves a table, because we predict this little spot is going to get pretty packed, pretty quick.
Wild Canary is a destination bistro well worth the short drive to Brookfield.
