El Publico is no new kid on the block. In fact, it won us over back in 2012 with its punchy cocktails, super cool interior and of course, the incredible Mexican street food that Perth was in such desperate need of. Four years on (anyone else feeling old?) and the crew here are still kicking goals.

Heading in there recently for a Thursday night dinner, we were quite happy to order a margarita or two and opt for the Feed Me menu, because eight courses for $39 is always a good idea.

Guacamole, aka the best food that has ever existed, was a surefire way to get the night off to a good start. We also had the chicharron—fried pork rinds, a little bit like prawn crackers but so.much.better—and the chilli popcorn which was more addictive than you can imagine.

The Mexican street corn is an all-time favourite—because who doesn’t love juicy little pieces of corn covered with cheese, chilli, coriander and lime?—and the charred brussel sprout salad was pure perfection! But the real winner of the night was the Carbon de Mercado San Juan—that’s hot grilled meat to you and me. With four kinds of grilled meat including pork belly, chorizo, chicken and steak accompanied by corn tortillas and all the right salsas, sauces and sides, this is DIY dinner done right.

Dessert changes on the regs, but the fig and chia pudding we got was all sorts of delicious and everyone managed to fit in more than a few mouthfuls despite claiming we were just about to burst after the mains.

If you’re a tequila fan, the drinks list at El Publico will be right up your alley, with a few different margaritas to choose from and a tequila selection that will make your head spin before you even take a sip. If the thought of tequila gives you painfully embarrassing flashbacks to your uni days (ahem…), you are in good hands with a huge selection of cocktails, craft beer and wine on the menu.
