While Halloween has been celebrated in Australia for many years, we only started doing it well a few years ago. I think our love for America started when Obama came into power. He is one cool dude. The next Pres. better keep up his good work or else there will be hell to pay.

Now, back to Halloween! If you’re not quite ready to host your own spooky bash, we’ve compiled a hit list of the best places to celebrate Halloween in Perth, as well as Perth’s best costume shops.

Where to party?

Carnival Macabre is back again this year thanks to the City of Perth. The spooky carnival kicks off on 28 October and runs to 1 November and incorporates heaps of events happening around town. On the big H day there will be scary screenings at Northbridge Piazza, but the event we’re most excited about is the Zombie Masquerade Ball. There’ll be free swing and salsa dance classes, a jazz band, Day of the Dead dancers, life sized chess where you actually get to be a piece in the game (Harry Potter fans eat your heart out!), BMX tricksters, zombie tag, treats and face painting. If you’re hungry, food trucks Eat No Evil and Chicho Gelato have you covered. Don’t forget to ghoul yourself up a bit and leave the booze at home, this is an alcohol free event.

Where: Northbridge Piazza
When: 4:30—10pm, 31 October
Price: Free!
More information: Available here

If you’d prefer to have a few bevvies on Halloween, head to the BAR POP Halloween Bash at the Perth Urban Orchard. Set to be a killer shindig (as are all Urban Orchard events) you can expect plenty of cocktails in cauldrons, pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and a dance off to Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Totes awesome! There will be prizes for the best dressed and tickets include a drink on arrival and a bucket load of candy, you won’t need to go trick-or-treating beforehand.

Die-hard Halloween fans and scare hunters will want to visit the Fremantle Prison this spooky season for one of their Halloween Tours. Hear tales from the gallows where 44 people were hanged and stories of lost souls as you are guided through the prison after dark. If you’re afraid of ghosts best to blend in and dress like one!

American’s love their spiced pumpkin, but unfortunately Australia hasn’t cottoned on to this amazing flavour combination—except for the geniuses at Wolf Lane. This Halloween you’ll be able to score yourself $10 spiced pumpkin daiquiris at this awesome little bar in the Perth CBD. AND if that wasn’t awesome enough, when you quote the word ‘howl’ you’ll also get selected beers, ciders and the spirit of the week for $5. DJ Philly Blunt will be spinning tracks from 7pm and there will be a prize for the best dress so don’t leave your costume at home.

Where: Wolf Lane, Perth
When: 4pm to late, 31 October

Show off your frightening footwork at the Fremantle Town Hall this Halloween as it plays host to the OUTdance Halloween Social Dance as part of the Fremantle Festival. From disco to ballroom, there’s something for everyone and if you’re not keen to wear your full Halloween getup, you can just don orange, white or black. But we think a costume will be more fun!

But what will I wear?

One of Perth’s best costume shops, Memory Lane stock more than 30,000 costumes. They’ve got period costumes and fancy dress from creepy animals and pirates to cowboys and priests. If you’re heading to the Gothic Steampark Halloween Party, head to Memory lane and they’ll have you covered.

For the best pirate costumes in town go to Walk The Plank in South Perth. Obvi! They’ve also got pretty much any Disney costume you can dream of (hells yeah!) and all of the regular fancy dress getup.

Doyles Fancy Costumes in Wangara is THE place to go for the spookiest costumes this Halloween. The superstore holds a huge range of costumes, accessories and makeup you can buy or hire. Zombies, outlaws, creepy clowns and werewolfs are all welcome here, but our pick would have to be the Slimer from Ghostbusters…it’s basically a fat, lumpy, green costume that will hide your food baby after you eat too much candy. Doyles have also got a shop in Osborne Park if that’s a little closer to your neck of the woods. Doyles is definitely one of Perth’s best costume shops!

Fancy yourself a biohazard zombie nurse? Or maybe you’re more of a sexy devil nurse? Whatever it may be, Hurly Burly in Perth will make your Halloween costume dreams come true. You can visit the city store or purchase your costume online. Easy!

If you’re more of a DIY-er Vinnies Retro Boutique in Northbridge have got a whole bunch of clothing you can work with to create an awesome outfit, just try not to get sidetracked by all the vintage pretties!
