In news that’ll amuse and delight the most ravenous of culture vultures, the famed and acclaimed musical The Book of Mormon is coming to Perth. This means all your favourite hits from ‘Hello’ to ‘Spooky Mormon Hell Dream’ will be dancing across the stage in all the vibrant, tactile glory of a live performance.
Most of us are well aware that The Book of Mormon isn’t like other musicals. First opening on Broadway in 2011, the irreverent stage play came into being when South Park creators, Matt Parker and Trey Stone, joined forces with a co-writer of Avenue Q, Robert Lopez, and took aim at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. If you’re unfamiliar with these credentials, this means that The Book of Mormon is effectively a two-hour-and-35-minute parody of the Mormon faith. If musicals were people this one would wear a leather jacket and chew on a toothpick.
The story follows the bright-eyed Elder Price, fresh out of the missionary training centre and ready to embark on his mission. But his plans to convert the entire planet go hilariously awry when, instead of Orlando, Florida, he is sent to a poverty-stricken village in Uganda with the incompetent Elder Cunningham. Hilarity and culture shock ensues as the unlikely duo set about doing God's work.
The Perth leg of the Australian tour takes to the Crown Theatre stage in September and they've just released incredibly cheap preview screening tickets for $20 a pop. Limited to two per person, you'll have to get down to the box office to grab yours. Can't make it? All other tickets can be purchased here.
Expect salty language, adult themes, and fun for the whole family provided that everyone in the family is over 16.
