Oh what a year it has been for the Perth restaurant scene! From pizza and pasta to Mexican and Mod Oz, there are a few spots you should have ticked off your list this year.
Here are the best new Perth restaurants of 2017.
Canteen has been open for a few months now and after multiple visits, we’re pretty sure that they are dishing up the best pizza in Perth. Big call, we know, but we’re standing by it. The dough is next level and the toppings are simple but delicious, just as you’d expect from the guys behind one of our other faves, Il Lido. If you haven’t been here yet, do yourself a favour and book a table before 2017 is over.
La Vida Urbana
La Vida Urbana opened in September and quickly became one of our favourite restaurants in Perth, From the legends that brought us El Publico, you can expect the same tasty Mexican eats with a slightly more casual vibe at La Vida Urbana. The vegetarian nachos are absolutely phenomenal and the Brussel sprouts and cheese dish is a must order. You can also just pop in for a drink at the bar or for breakfast. Winning.
While some might call Henry Summer a bar, we're calling it a bar AND a restaurant, because the food absolutely deserves a mention! The Henry Summer board, crispy dumplings, seafood platter and cauliflower steak should all be on your hitlist. Have we mentioned that it's dog-friendly too?
If you're partial to stunning interiors, spectacular ocean views, delicious eats and a glass of rosé or two, then Island Market in Trigg is the place for you. Opening just in time for summer, it is THE perfect spot to take in one of our spectacular sunsets. When it comes to food, think filled pitas, Israeli smashed avo, feta labneh, taramasalata, baba ghanoush and hummus to start, then choose from scrumptious dishes like wood-roasted chicken wings, fried calamari, BBQ octopus, mussels and much more! Dessert is also a must—get the wood-roasted pineapple, ouzo caramel and mastitha ice-cream.
Cook + Mason
We were pretty devastated when Barque in East Fremantle closed earlier this year, but the news that another amazing restaurant would open in that same space was enough to keep us going. Cook & Mason’s Chef Gord Kahle changes the menu up on the regs to make the most of what's in season, but his custom-made wood fire grill is a staple, so you can expect delicious flavours every time you go.
Heno & Rey
Welcome to your new Friday night local! Heno & Rey puts on an epic Spanish tapas spread, not to mention their cocktails are incredible. Boasting a raw bar, some stellar WA wines, sangria on tap and churros, the reinvented tapas bar offers up a vibrant atmosphere you’ll never want to leave. Gather your pals for a night of cheese and cured meats, croquettes, jugs of sangria and all of the churros, Spanish doughnut balls and Portuguese tarts you can handle.
If you’re a fan of Japanese, you need to try this new spot in Northbridge. Sakura Sake specialises in traditional sushi, sashimi, tempura and all the delicious food you would expect to find in Japan—but the really exciting part is metre long sushi platter. Get there immediately.
If your date nights have become a little stale (there is only so much Netflix and chilling one can handle), we’ve got the solution for you! Ascua opened in November and brought with it a whole lot of Spanish sophistication. Let the sommelier guide you through the wine list as you watch the chefs work their magic on the woodfire grill in the open kitchen. Once you’ve worked up an appetite from all of the theatrics it’s time to devour some WA dry-aged beef cooked on said woodfire grill. The best bit?
Opening earlier this year, New Normal in Subiaco sources all its produce from Australia's southwest and the dishes are influenced by the seasons with a big focus on sustainability! The menu is modern and features loads of imaginative veggie dishes which are all phenomenal—you can trust us, we’ve tasted every single one of them—and all the wine is from WA, so get drinking!
No Menu has only been open for a hot minute, but we’re more than happy to put it on this list. The authentic Italian eatery has taken over the spot that was Rockefeller on Beaufort Street and Ace Pizza before that, and we think this might be just what the punters were after. The dishes change every day (hence the name) and are chosen based on what the team finds at the markets each day, so you're guaranteed fresh, delicious eats every single time. The staff will happily make some recommendations if you're not sure what to get, so all you need to do is order a glass of wine, sit back and relax. Perfect.
