I’ve got two words for you: cocktails and jaffles.
Before you pooh-pooh this combination, let me just say that sitting up at the large green marble bar at Halford, drinking a martini and chowing down on a crayfish toasted brioche, may just change your mind.
And so sets the scene for Halford—a new Perth late-night bar full of a mixture of things you wouldn’t expect to work but which totally do.
The brainchild of John Parker, who also owns Northbridge bar The Standard (and who is an absolute legend!) Halford is a plush 1950's lounge bar sitting in the basement of the newly refurbished State Buildings on the corner of Hay Street and Cathedral Avenue.
Let’s just get this straight—Halford is like nothing you’ve seen before. It’s dark, it’s decadent, it’s sexy and it’s lavish. And it might just become your fave late-night drinking hole cos it’s open til 2am on the weekend. Boom.
With the bar incorporating the original features of what was the basement safe room of the old Titles Office, the interior of this Perth bar is a real talking point. There’s rainbow-like fluoro theatre lighting, gold swan bathroom taps, gold-mirrored tabletops, marble surfaces, steel bank-safe shutters, vintage artwork and plenty of pink and purple velvet throughout the bar.
A modern take on the great 1950's lounge bar where elegance and conversation were king, Halford is cosy, comfy and the perfect place to snuggle in with your date or catch up on the goss with your mates.
Cocktails and premium bubbles are the order of the day, with four martini’s on offer, as well as a bunch of old-school classics like the Singapore Sling and Mint Julep. The signature cocktails step things up a notch with concoctions like the Cold-brew Martini (cold brew, rum, coffee liqueur, ginger), a perky and refreshing twist on an espresso martini, and the Spice Merchant which will knock your socks off (in a good way) with the inclusions of chocolate scotch, raspberry gin, black tea syrup and angostura bitters.
Halford isn’t all sexy cocktails though—there’s also 14 beers and ciders (most of them are craft/boutique brewed) plus an extensive wine list.
The menu is only small (perfect for a pre-dinner snack or a late night snack…or an any-time snack?) but once you taste the jaffles, you’re not going to want anything else anyway. Choose between the jamon serrano with three cheeses, the king oyster mushroom with caramelised onion and camembert or the crayfish with semi dried tomato, dill and salmon roe mayonnaise. These babies are pretty much the fanciest and most delicious toasties you've ever had. They are damn delicious.
A visit to Halford really is a multi-sensory experience that will drag you into a dark and brooding cocktail experience and spit you out the other side wiser and better for the experience. We suggest you go check it out stat.
