We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, 2016 has been a big year for Perth. There have been so many new restaurants, bars and cafes popping up that we have been struggling to keep up with it all.
With what feels like hundreds of new openings, narrowing it down to 16 was tough work, but we’re generous souls here so we kept at it to bring you the top 16 new openings in Perth in 2016.
Coast on Port Beach is quintessentially West Australian. The vibe is relaxed and casual so you're more than welcome to pop in for a drink straight after a swim, but if you're after something a little more glam take a seat in the restaurant and take your pick from drool-worthy steak, fresh seafood, amazing salads and so much more.
The Hummus Club
The Hummus Club has fiiiiinally opened! Treating Perthies with their delectable middle-eastern cuisine and general good vibes, this most definitely needs to be on your must-visit list, and the beef kibbeh should be on your must-eat list.
Alcohol and doughnuts, together at last in glorious harmony. MOP make specialty brioche-style drunken doughnuts fresh on site. There’s other stuff too like burgers, ice cream and drunken freakshakes. Dear lord.
Ramen lovers, if you haven’t been to Ramen Lab yet you’re doing life wrong. Whether you’re looking for traditional ramen or something a bit different, you’ll find what you’re after here. Our top pick goes to the Yuzu Shio ramen which tastes like summer in a soup—Yuzu is Japanese lemon—and trust us when we say you absolutely must try the bao here.
Young Love Mess Hall
Young Love Mess Hall opened on William Street and we’d be willing to bet it’s one of Perth’s most beautiful venues. Moody lighting, so.much.greenery and the most beautiful feature wall you ever will see—you’re never going to want to leave. Go for a drink, stay for dinner and we have no doubt this will be your new fave spot to hang out in Perth.
Sweetwater Rooftop Bar
With the former head chef of Melbourne’s Gingerboy and the former bar manager from Mechanic’s Institute joining forces, you know you’re in for a pretty sweet ride at Sweetwater. The dynamic duo are whipping up amazing cocktails and Asian-inspired noms so you can enjoy the view from the sixth story venue.
Lulu La Delizia
Lalla Rookh’s former head chef Joel Valvasori is doing his part for Subiaco with the addition of pasta bar Lulu La Delizia. If you ever had pasta at Lalla Rookh then this place will already be on your hit list.
Mason & Bird
The brainchild of Print Hall's former head chef, Brad Johnston, and the ex-venue and bar manager of Rockpool, Matt Nguyen, Mason & Bird is less fine dining and more of a casual affair but with the same wow-worthy flavours you'd expect. The all-day menu has something to suit every mood, from homemade cocoa pops to braised lamb pappardelle.
Filos & Yiros
Brika’s famous lamb yiros are now available every single day of the week from their new take away window Filos & Yiros. There’s a variety of yiros as well as plenty of pastries and coffee. You can also order a side of that delicious halloumi to go.
The Emerson Bar
In the spot that used to be Carnegies, The Emerson Bar is spread across three levels with the rooftop bar serving our favourite summer drink, frosé. The bar stays open into the wee hours of the night so you can drink and dance the night away in style.
Another Subiaco newbie, Rice Baby's cocktail game is strong and their dumpling game is even stronger. Try the matcha lava cake and thank us later.
Located within the Art Gallery of WA, Arthouse Dine is an edgy, modern bistro serving classics with a twist. They have an amazing brunch menu, but a long lunch with some excellent vino is where it’s at. They’re also open for dinner on Friday and Saturday if you feel like treating yourself.
Tiisch got us all excited with b-e-a-utiful pics of their interiors before they started teasing us with the food that would be on offer. They opened a few months back on the corner of Milligan and Hay Streets in Perth and have been making all the CBD workers very happy chappy’s ever since.
Neho Asian Tapas
Neho Asian Tapas are dishing out amazing eats like beef short rib rendang and karrancini—their take on traditional arancini, which is still full of cheesy goodness but is taken to the next level with kimchi and gochujang mayo (super similar to sriracha mayo FYI).
Mack Daddy’s New York Slice
New York Pizza by the slice, just how we like it. On their opening weekend, Mack Daddy's ran out of cheese. 120kgs of it. If that doesn’t say enough about the drool-worthy pizza here, then we don’t know what else to tell you.
It felt like we were waiting an absolute age for Meat Candy to open, so we were pretty stoked when it finally opened just around the corner from The Urban List office! With delish fried chicken, a plethora of smoked meats and epic bloody mary’s, this might be our new regular.
