Winter in Queensland might never get cold enough to rock that fabulous faux fur coat you impulse-bought at last year’s mid-season sale, but it definitely does get cold enough to crave carby comfort food—and what’s more comforting than the golden goodness of a jaffle? Nothing, obvs.
Not to be confused with the humble toastie, the jaffle’s robust pockets of crisped-up bread can be literally STUFFED with deliciousness (just watch out for the volcanic eruption on your first bite), and they’re popping up at spots all over Brisbane.
Why not just whip one up at home, you say? Well, you could. But you could also go to that 6am yoga class and wash it all down with a green smoothie for breakfast. So for a fancy AF food fix to rival you go-to cheese and vegemite (which remains a classic not to be underrated), here’s our pick of the top ten spots in Brisbane to find jaffle joy.
Fitz & Potts
If a character-filled rooftop bar complete with 70s-chic décor, astroturf, and a village vibe doesn’t scream “load me up with carby goodness!” then we don’t know what does. The jaffles at Fitz & Potts come filled with gourmet meats, cheeses and veggies, served with chutney and chips. Best enjoyed with a craft beer.
The guys at Project 41 take their jaff game up a notch, with tasty morsels like smoked pork hock, eggplant parmigiana, pastrami and sauerkraut, and the crowd pleaser—spaghetti bolognese. Pair it with one of their in-house pastries and a cup of Joe from local boutique roasters Blackstar Coffee or The Odyssey Project, and you’ve got yourself one fine-looking spread.
This eatery was once an aquarium, but there’s nothing fishy about Let Minnow's amazing jumbo jaffles. Try the truffled mushroom, or pig out on the twice-baked pork belly with barbecue sauce, spinach and double cheddar.
Jaffles are the signature dish at Ronny's, both sweet and savoury. You can opt for their savoury bites likes barbecue pulled chicken or pastrami, but it’s hard to go past their epic dessert concoctions—think doughnut jaffles with marshmallow ice cream, or white chocolate and mixed berry with popping candy and pistachio ice cream.
These guys love coffee, but Sedo is also killing it in the jaffle game. Check out their blackboard for multiple creative varieties that change weekly, like the Hawaiian, tuna melt, baked beans & bacon, and even the eggs bennie (yum). Cheap and delicious food, sorted.
Crunchy, oozy, cheesy lasagne—in a jaffle? Yes, please, Denim Co! We’re also digging the breakfast jaffle of bacon and eggs at this cute-as-a-button south-side cafe.
Jaffle Shmaffle Food Van
If the name didn’t already get you craving the steamy heat only a jaffle can bring, then their epic fillings will. The Jaffle Shmaffle Food Van is bringing their jaffle-y goodness to a market, brewery, cafe and other events near you. Specialising in smoked meats and pickled veggies, there’s also a mac ‘n’ cheese (yes, we’re serious) and there’s even, wait for it, a Mars Bar jaffle (cue heavy breathing).
Famished on Frasers
This rustic café is big on quality, locally sourced ingredients, which means they’re our kind of people. Famous for absolutely #nailing epic flavour combos, Famished on Frasers' pulled pork shoulder jaffle with fried egg, crumbly Mersey Valley cheddar and hollandaise is legendary for a reason.
Escobar Kitchen & Bar
If jaffles are your drug of choice you’ll want to make a beeline for Escobar. The perfect spot for a late-night jaffle fix, the refined seventies theme plates up gourmet fillings like pork ragu or bubble and squeak, and our hot tip is to order more than one.
Café en Route
If you’re after a jaffle on the run, Café En Route (geddit?) does them drive-thru style. Expect delicious parcels of ham off the bone, cheese and mustard from a shipping container in a disused garage. Jaffles without leaving the car? Genius.
