The age old saying ‘prevention vs cure’ rings true in almost all scenarios; and so, it turns out, is also true in the world of cosmetic injectables.

It (practically) goes without saying that any cosmetic procedure is a completely individual and very personal choice. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ time or age to try them for the first time, if you’re keen to do so.

If you are so inclined, discussion of a golden window to start your cosmetic injection journey does exist, whereby you’re effectively preventing the development of fine lines and wrinkles versus treating deeper frown and expression lines in older age.

The ideal age, you ask? Sydney-based Cosmetic Physician, Dr Phoebe Jones says it’s younger than you might think. “The most common question I get asked from patients is ‘what is the magic number to start getting anti-wrinkle procedures? And if I had to put an age on it, I would say around 27.”

Dr Jones explains that it’s in our late 20s to early 30s that we start to lose collagen and elasticity in the skin, so beginning with smaller doses of anti-wrinkle injections is “ideal for preventative purposes around this age.“

“While an individual’s age is a contributing factor to deciding on when to get anti-wrinkle

injections, there is no ‘fixed‘ age—other factors come into play.” Jones adds that key lifestyle factors such as extended sun exposure and smoking all play a factor in prematurely aging the skin. Forming healthy lifestyle habits (like applying sunscreen every day, eating a balanced nutritious diet and exercising regularly) are key in determining when an individual might start looking at cosmetic treatment for fine lines.

“For example” Dr. Jones continues, “people with naturally overly expressive faces may start a little earlier than their late 20s, so becoming fastidious about things such as sun protection is invaluable for your skin,” she added.

As with many things in the cosmetic industry, it is ultimately up to you, the individual to determine whether cosmetic injectables are right for you. Speaking with a practicing professionals such as Dr. Jones about your lifestyle and desired outcome are vital in ensuring you are choosing the right treatment for you.

There is no ‘one size fits all’, especially when it comes to age and something as individual as your appearance.
