We were all devastated when the Ekka was cancelled for 2020, and the joys of sideshow alley, dagwood dogs and all the epic rides were tabled for a year (though some events are going virtual—more on that here). But to help cheer us all up, and to raise money for a charity for whom the loss of Ekka fundraising has hit hard, Stone & Wood brewery has come up with a little something special—strawberries and cream beer.

That’s right, in honour of Ekka, you’ll be able to sip on a strawberry sundae-inspired beer, aptly named ‘Strawberry Sundae Kisses’. The strawberries and cream sour is currently brewing with 60kg of strawberries, lactose and vanilla, for a rich, creamy beer that tastes a little like your favourite Ekka sundae. It’ll be ready to pour on August 12, and just like the traditional sundaes, all proceeds from the beer sold between August 12–16 will be donated to The Common Good, a fundraising initiative of The Prince Charles Hospital that generates funds for critical health research.

According to Stone & Wood’s Brisbane head brewer, Mick Barnes, “When the physical Ekka show was cancelled, we kept thinking of the delicious strawberry sundaes and all the money they raise for the Foundation. Then we said to ourselves, well, we can’t exactly make ice-cream–but what about beer?“

Even better, the beer will be poured alongside—wait for it—beer ice cream floats. We didn’t even know that was a thing until right now, but frankly, we’re already sold. The Stone & Wood brewery in Fortitude Valley will also be an official spot where you can get an Ekka Strawberry Sundae—read more about that here. It might sound like a strawberry overload, but if you’re a true Brisbanite, you can never get enough of the Ekka’s best dessert.

Head along to the Stone & Wood brewery in Fortitude Valley between August 12–16 to get yourself a pint—and one of those beer ice cream floats. Cheers!

In the meantime, why not sample this beesting beer
