Ekka Day Dessert

It’s that time of year again where strawberry ice cream and Bertie Beetles reign supreme. The Ekka public holiday hits this Wednesday, bringing us the usual frivolities of show bags, vomitrons, and the unmistakable smell of livestock. If you’re looking to break tradition this year and skip the annual show, Brisbane has supplied us with plenty of festive events that will scratch that Ekka itch.

Check out the ten things you should be doing instead of going to the Ekka this year.

All Week

The Netherworld Sideshow

For the entire Ekka fortnight, Netherworld will be transforming into a sideshow. Roll up for classically creepy Netherworld vibes, featuring carnival games, show bags, fairy floss and every creepy clown from your nightmares. The Hellmouth Diner has even put together a special menu for the event featuring all your show faves.

When: 6–18 August
Where: Netherworld, Fortitude Valley

Ekka Carnival Fun

If your main gripe with The Ekka is that there is not enough beer, head to Sea Legs Brewing Company for your kind of show day. This Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday they’re hosting a mini-carnival where you can do all the usual things such as play carnival games and eat all manner of deep-fried food. There will also, of course, be plenty of beer, including a limited release strawberry milkshake IPA.

When:12pm–9pm, 13–16 August
Where: Sea Legs Brewing Company

Ekka Dessert

Think strawberries in syrup, topped with a delicious strawberry parfait, with strawberry meringue sticks scattered on top. They are serving up this dessert for a limited time only, so if you’re a fan of the classic Ekka ice cream you need to order this fast.
