Sick of the same old slog, Listers? We all know its easy to get stuck in a fitness rut but c’mon, it’s time to move on from Zumba and Tae-bo and try one of the new exercise classes on offer in our fitness-loving city. Perth's best gyms are ready to shake up your world, from nude yoga (seriously) to Absolute Metafit, we’re making our way through this hot list of new Perth exercise trends in our quest for toned tushies, amazing abs and massive endorphin rushes.
Here’s our 2015 exercise bucket list of the best Perth gyms and events to get your new exercise moves on. How many can you tick off by the end of the year? Aaaaaand go!
If you’re a little wound up or just feel like getting bad ass, pull on some gloves and head down to Anarchy Training Centre in West Perth. With a boxing ring in the corner, take a group session or personal training with specially qualified boxing instructors who observe and correct form, while making sure everyone is having fun. The centre is owned by 2010 Miss Universe Australia runner up Renae Wauhop and professional boxer Glen Austin, who believe their classes not only build strength and fitness but confidence, skill and self-esteem. Walk in, swagger out.
You had us at hammock. Savasana in a silk hammock sounds kind of divine, even if you have to get through multiple inversions, strength and flexibility training to get there. Using different muscle groups to mat-based classes, Aerial yoga uses the supportive hammock to heighten your yoga practice. AirYoga is one of the best gyms in Perth for an ariel workout.
This is going to take some
balls confidence. Remove mental pictures of naked down facing dog because this is a mostly-seated yoga class aimed at generating self-acceptance and awareness. A candlelit, darkened room with beautiful music sets the scene before you shimmy out of your robe and insecurities and launch into gentle poses and breathing exercises at Twisting Peacock Yoga in Osborne Park. Appreciating your body for what it does rather than its size or shape is a beautiful and freeing thought. You can book your class here!
Inner City Yoga Retreat
A yoga retreat is definitely bucket list worthy, but getting to an exotic location can make it tricky to achieve. Instagram yoga beauty Rhyanna VL has set up a three-day course that has all the fix-ins of a retreat (a series of yoga workshops, nourishing food and a yogi mocktail party) without having to venture out of Perth.
The latest piece of equipment shredding our waistlines is hosted at LaFit Studio in Subiaco. Providing a high intensity workout with minimal impact on the joints (you’re welcome, knees), the megaformer has lured Hollywood heavyweights like Sofia Vergara and plenty of Perthonalities. The machine provides over 300 exercises incorporating strength, cardio, balance, flexibility and core training.
Blend the posture and dance aspect of ballet with the small movements and technique focus of pilates and you get one heck of a tough workout. The Xtend Barre burn will be real days later.
You’ll never feel the same way about your spin class after hitting the wilderness with two wheels. Head up to the Perth hills (Kalamunda and Pickering Brook have great trails) for a cardio hit out and connect with the outdoors (it smells much better than the stale sweat of a studio). If you want to hire a bike or take a lesson try Rock and Roll Mountain Biking.
Combining HIIT and functional training within a 45-minute coached session, F45 is gaining a fast following as one of the best gyms in Perth. Who’s coming with us to the Hollywood Circuit class? Leaving behind the celebrities, this one is designed for the stunt guys. Various locations have started to pop up around Perth, but we love the original F45 West Leederville.
The perfect place to rock your leopard-print workout pants, Zuu is based on primal movement patterns that use bodyweight to strengthen minor and major muscle groups while promoting aerobic and anaerobic fitness. The Zuu system uses 30 animal movements (think bear crawls, frog squats and gorilla walks) to strengthen the whole body, creating muscle and joint strength and stability. Bring your inner-animal to this class.
If you’re time poor, this is a fast way to get fit. A half hour class, Absolute Metafit WA uses HIIT principles and bodyweight to target the big muscle groups. Classes run in Applecross, Melville and Ardross so get south of the river for this metabolism-firing sweat fest. Find a class via Absolute Metafit WA’s facebook page.
A Charity event
There’s nothing like upping the feel good factor of exercise with an event raising funds for a worthy cause. Support Canteen while you do the Perth Marathon and Relay, Diabetes WA benefits from the Fremantle Half Marathon or team up for the Oxfam Trailwalker (100 or 50 kilometres). Appreciate your good health and fortune while helping others build theirs.
Open water swimming
Transport yourself to another world by swimming over marine life, craggy reef and the undulating curves of the ocean floor. If swimming solo has your heart aflutter (we get it, WA’s track record with toothy fish hasn’t been so good of late) Perth has plenty of big events to suit up for. Try Swimming WA’s Open Water Series, the iconic Rottnest Channel Swim, Swim Thru Rottnest or head a couple of hours south and swim around the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere at the Busselton Jetty Swim.
Stand Up Paddle Boarding
Give your body some major abdominal sculpting as you cruise above Freshwater Bay or Cottesloe Beach on a SUP board. If you’re up for a further challenge, try SUP Yoga and work on your handstands as marine life cruises by. Hire a board or take a class with Stand Up Surf Shop or visit Little SUP Café on Eric Street in Cottesloe for board hire (and an excellent brew to boot.)
