I love, love, love the idea of a place specialising in one thing and doing that one thing really well. It’s the norm in the US and Asia and I think it’s a concept that should be embraced more in Perth.
Putting all your eggs in one basket isn’t without its pitfalls though. If you’re only doing one thing, you better make sure you’re doing it exceptionally well!
Luckily for Perth diners, Francoforte Spaghetti Bar is a master of their one thing—pasta.
The tiny restaurant’s layout is simple and urban—think exposed cement walls, dark timber flooring and a green tiled kitchen with one side of the restaurant stacked high with tinned tomatoes.
The brainchild of owner Julian Staltari, this Italian restaurant in Perth has a traditional yet innovative feel, is tiny but full of heart—and is exactly what casual eating should be about.
While the menu is short and sweet, what is being dished out here is fresh, creative and inspired— and there’s something for everyone (including those that are vegan or gluten intolerant).
You can choose from a piccolo or grande size for all of the pastas, which range from the deceivingly simple guanciale carbonara (with delicious cured pigs cheek and pecorino), to a tasty kale pesto pasta with lemon, pine nuts, almonds, pecorino and cacciatore, a kangaroo bolognese and the ever popular porco rosso with Italian tomato sugo, traditional pork sausage and parmesan.
My tip would be to start with Francoforte’s antipasto for 2—a steal at $12—then get a piccolo pasta size (which is still a generous helping) and finish with the tiramisu…because dessert.
Go early (you can’t book), take a bottle of wine (it’s BYO), take cash (it’s cash-only) and settle in—Francoforte is the perfect spot for a casual, tasty and cosy lunch or dinner.
Just like a big ol’ Italian family, the crew here will welcome you will open arms, stuff you full of delicious pasta then send you on your way. And what more could you want really?
