It’s likely that when you head down south for a getaway the last thing on your mind is getting sweaty—unless it’s while tanning on one of the epic surf beaches or cruising around on a cellar-door crawl that is. But our very own adventure playground is home to a growing number of incredible yoga, Pilates and fitness studios that are well worth checking out. So, when you’re not hitting the surf, hiking the coastal tracks or taste tasting some vino, here’s your guide on where to workout down south.
The Movement South West
Owners Shelby Walsh and Callum Foster are the dynamic duo behind The Movement South West—our favourite spot to swing by for a sweat session down south. With HIIT, strength and conditioning, functional fitness and RPM classes on offer, there is always space for another player in this team. Just expect to sweat bucket loads.
From her in-house custom built studio (or outdoor ballet barre if you’re lucky!) Bec Dewar runs Wellgevity—a small group, semi-private and 1-1 studio that specialises in Pilates, Barre and mindful movement modalities. Aiming to create wellness through movement, this is the place to come if you want a workout that will leave you feeling refreshed and revitalised! She also specifically caters for peeps who are visiting the region for events like weddings and girls' getaways.
OM Time Yoga
Far removed from the trending “workout focused” yoga classes creeping into gym timetables OM Time Yoga focuses on nourishing, restorative yoga practices so you know you'll leave feeling zen. Based in the Pranayama (that's the yogi term for the practice of breath, FYI) and with experience in Ashtanga, Vinyassa, Reiki and Quantum Touch, Mel’s classes are designed to help you tune inwards, and let's face it, we could all use a bit of that.
Aerial Physio At Movement Solutions
For a unique experience in Margaret River, you might fancy Aerial Physio. The classes combine yoga, Pilates and a little bit of circus for a workout that enhances your flexibility, strength and coordination! Never been suspense mid-air in an aerial hammock before? No worries! You will be fully supported in the non-impact but core-burning workout, which helps reverse the effects of gravity.
Yoga By The Bay
Capitalising on the beauty of the South West coastline, Yoga By The Bay runs daily sessions on the Dunsborough foreshore and Sunday sessions at Eagle Bay community hall. As you soak up the ocean vibes and breathe deeply into the salty air, these seaside classes will have you flowing, stretching and strengthening with a mix of Hatha and Vinyassa Yoga practices.
Yoga South West
Sharing the same site as The Movement South West sits one of the most popular yoga studios in the region. Yoga South West offers classes entrenched in the authentic yoga lineages of Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Yin, so you can select your session depending on the time of day and your holiday mood. Just remember to get in early though, the studio packs out with devoted regulars and holidaymakers eager to get bendy and it isn’t uncommon for the class to hit capacity well before the first sun salutation of the morning.
New Life Reformer Pilates
New Life Pilates Studio owner, Andree Lupton, has a weaponry of knowledge behind her and an eagle eye for picking out any cheating on technique! In her small group circuit classes, you'll work your entire body as you activate, flex, stretch and tone. As she hones in on your alignment and function, you’ll be sweating up a storm (didn’t we tell you those small Pilates movements can be seriously hard!)
Down South Physio And Sports Rehab
If you've got an injury and thought you could use that as an excuse to chill out, sorry, but you can't. The team at Down South Physio and Sports Rehab facilitate specific physio-led rehabilitation sessions to get you back up and running, or hitting the surf, ASAP. Offering sport/surf specific sessions, alongside classes suitable for the over 60s and “prehab” conditioning (that’s bullet-proofing your body before injury strikes) a heap of the treatment options may also be covered by private health insurance. Win.
KT Personal Training
KT Personal Training has long been one of the most popular Dunsborough personal training facilities for 1-1, duo or small group personal training sessions, as well as outdoor boot camps. With a multifaceted approach—your training session might cross between strength and conditioning drills to specific rehabilitation on the Pilates reformer—the focus here is on helping you achieve your long-term health and fitness goals, even if you're only down south for a couple of weeks.
The Zen Den Collective is a collaborative studio of independent yogis and teachers who offer a whole spread of classes from dynamic flow classes and naturopathy to crystal bowl healing and chakra dancing. There’s even a Yoga for Blokes class. If you’re looking for something a little different, you can always try out a SUP yoga session in the pristine Geographe Bay!
CrossFit Margaret River
CrossFit Margaret River offers strength and conditioning group classes, personal training and nutritional guidance for all fitness levels. Regardless of your experience, there is a crew of qualified trainers on hand to coach you through the challenging workouts and weekly beginner’s classes on offer specifically for first timers. The community of friends sweating through the WOD’s are constantly encouraging each other and the doors always open for experienced or travelling CrossFit athletes dropping by.
Ninja Warrior fans listen up! Janet Smith—she reached the Australian semi-finals FYI—is the head coach at Mocean Fitness! Running the only licensed workouts on the River Mouth Beach, you’ll be flipping tyres on the sand, running sprints or carrying pine poles above your head. Back in the gym, you can try out functional fitness circuits, boxing fusion classes or a ZUU session—a programme using bodyweight exercises to hone your primal movement skills. For something truly unique, try testing your own ninja skills in the custom created Ninja Fit class—maybe we’ll be seeing you on TV next?!
