When you consider everything you love about Fremantle—the salty air, iconic sunsets, heritage architecture, fresh fish and chips—Little Creatures isn’t far from the top of the list. That’s why we were all but jumping up and down when we found out that they had a new project on the way: a modern bar, eatery and dedicated live music space due to open just in time for summer.
Let’s start with the food and drinks. Taking over the spot that was Creatures NextDoor as part of a revamp of the entire Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour precinct, Creatures’ new eatery Helm is set to celebrate its closest neighbour—the Indian Ocean—through design, menu and experience. The building, constructed in the 1980’s for the America’s Cup, appears to be the inspiration behind both the name and vision for Helm—reminiscent of the bridge of a boat, it enjoys spectacular ocean views and makes for a place of enjoyment, escape and observation.
It will come as no surprise that the menu is set to celebrate Aussie land and sea through offering fresh, honest shared plates using seasonal, local produce—but the aim is that dishes will make for an interactive dining experience. A wood-fired grill will become the centrepiece of the kitchen, headed up by Mathew Powell who brings experience from powerhouse Chez Max by Marco Pierre White and local superstars Il Lido Italian Canteen, not to mention from right next door at Little Creatures Brewing itself.
Pair this with quality craft brews, a thoughtful wine list and creative cocktails and we suspect that this’ll be a place of many lazy long lunches, sunset drinks and group dinner celebrations. True to Freo’s charm, expect friendly, top-notch service in a laid-back, relaxed setting where quality doesn’t detract from character.
Inevitably, those long lunches and lingering dinners turn into cravings for late-night entertainment. Enter: SONAR Room, the second part of this exciting venture and dedicated live music and performance art space tucked away behind the towering silos of Little Creatures, adjacent to Helm.
Local booking agent Six By Nine Agency is in charge of curating an exciting calendar of national and local acts in the way of live music, burlesque, comedy and special events, with a variety of names already set to grace the stage including Melbourne’s Mustered Courage, Indie folk group Little Quirks and local legend Jack Davies.
Both Helm and SONAR Room are set to launch mid-November, right on time for summer shenanigans soaking up all of the Fremantle vibes!
