When they said Sunday is the day of rest, they were referring to sipping beer in the sunshine with mates… right? Don't let a looming Monday morning spoil your fun, finish your weekend on a high note by doing what West Aussies do best, partaking in a Sunday session. From beachside bars to bustling breweries, we’ve rounded up some of Perth's best Sunday sessions for you to check out. Cheers!
The Norfolk Hotel
Any Perth bar that’s been around since the 1800's has got to be doing something good, right? Turns out the limestone-bricked Norfolk does plenty: a leafy beer garden, revolving craft beers on tap, and cosy heaters when the sun goes down. On Sundays, it gets even more spesh, with BBQ hot wings, 32 tap beers, and crowd-pleasing DJs spinning old-school soul on the decks. Hell yes!
This neighbourhood bar has all the hallmarks of a hipster watering hole (exposed bricks, street art, vintage lights, boutique pours) but none of the ‘tude. Mount Lawley locals cram into Clarences on Sundays for Gypsy pear cider and decadent “It’s still the weekend!” meals like ramen fried chicken burgers. Oh yeah...
Bathers Beach House
Forget about other joints’ so-called beachside views (cough, the occasional glimpse of blue that strains your eyesight in the process). This beachfront bar is nek level, poised right on Freo’s Bathers Beach so you can sip your cocktail from a sun lounger right on the sand. The bright modern restaurant, bedecked in primary colours, has a decent selection of local craft beer faves and an extensive cocktail menu, plus seriously good fish and chips for when it’s time to mop up your transgressions, making Bathers Beach House an easy call as one of the best bars in Perth for a Sunday session.
Every other Sunday this live music fave runs Get Down Sundays, with party-time jams from a stellar roster of DJs. The impressive PA system and chilled outdoor courtyard are drawcards if you're looking for a Sunday session, but it’s Rosemount's burgers and quality pub grub we’re most excited about. Easily one of Perth's best Sunday sessions.
Bill’s Bar and Bites
Keen for some decadent food without signing your soul over to a stuffy restaurant? Bill’s Bar and Bites in Leedy is your saviour, with its cool interior—sexy lighting from low-hanging bulbs, exposed brick and long wooden tables—and a seriously impressive menu. For one of Perth's best Sunday sessions, try the fried chicken with chilli caramel and spicy slaw or the beef brisket sub and grab a round of their bangin' cocktails. Other drink highlights are the Royal Jamaican ginger beer, Young Henry's Real Ale and the Custard & Co cider. And for the stinges that spent all their dosh the night before, there’s always Emu Export for $6! Bars in Perth don't come cooler.
Despite its cavernous size, this Perth brewery is always buzzy and packed—especially on Sundays! And with free-flowing craft beer and cider brewed on premises, insanely good frites and friendly service from eccentric Freo types, it’s easy to see why. Families head out back to the outdoor deck for views of the fishing harbour, and a sandpit; dates flirt on the front terrace with its pretty flower gardens; and big groups play catch-ups inside, with its open kitchen and lofty beer vats. Little Creatures in one of the best bars in Perth so just be prepared to raise your voice when you’re ordering your Pipsqueak cider.
The Flying Scotsman
The Scotto, as its troupe of regulars call it, is a Perth pub with no pretence—which is exactly why said regulars return week after week. Despite the low-key vibe, there’s a surprisingly good selection of international and local drops with boutique beers like Beez Neez and Nail Ale on tap. Unbeatable for a casual Perth Sunday session.
The Beach Club
Perth Sunday sessions don’t always mean thongs and boardies—not if we’re talking about the super-swish Beach Club, that is. Instead, this Cottesloe hotspot is swarmed by the inhumanly glamorous, who dress up in towering heels or slick button-downs. The menu at this schmick Perth bar is accordingly fancy—think oysters and a fine selection of champers. La de da!
Ocean Beach Hotel
Fancy a beer after a swim at Cott Beach, but can’t deal with the Beach Club’s fancy dress code? Head to the OBH just a few hundred metres up the road, which is more low-key but every bit as pumping. Up to 1000 people crowd into the venue each Sunday arvo for ocean glimpses through large beach-facing windows and Matso’s Ginger Beer on tap. Yum.
The Nest At The Aviary
Midweek, suits and stilettos convene in this multi-level urban oasis, but on Sundays, the Aviary’s rooftop bar (Perth’s biggest!) draws punters of all persuasions. With kindergarten-bright seating, astroturf carpet and pumping feel-good DJs, it’s the perfect place to watch the sun set on the city skyline. Bonus points for its location near the traino: less cash spent on cab = more for G&Ts.
One the top places in Perth to sit in the sunshine and fill that hungover belly with fatty feeds is The Merrywell. With a stellar outdoor beer garden, plenty of delicious dude-food, cold beers, epic cocktails and sweet tunes—there's always plenty of good times to be had here. With local and international bottled and tap beers, cider, sparkling, reds, whites and rosés, not to mention a very tempting list of cocktail jugs like the Merrywell Sangria or the Strawberry Fields (with Gin, Aperol, strawberry liqueur, lemon and soda), it'll be easy to find something to quench your thirst.
The Guildford Hotel
If there’s one thing we can say for sure about The Guildford Hotel, it’s that their Sunday session game is strong! Whether you grab a bucket of ciders or a bloody Mary with a bun, you’ll be in good hands here. Round up the crew (make sure you’ve got a couple of tennis table pros with you), grab a drink or two and find a spot in the sun before you make your way to the ping pong table. Don't forget to try the cheeseburger spring rolls!
North Freo's Coast is one of Perth's best Sunday session spots. The vibe here is beach house chic and everyone’s welcome. Whether you’re out to celebrate with cocktails and champagne or you’ve come straight from a swim looking for a relaxed drink or two, you’ll feel right at home here.
If you haven’t been down to El Grotto at Scarborough Beach yet, then cancel your Sunday plans and lock it in for this weekend. Grab yourself some tacos and an icy cold margarita, because Mexican plus cocktails plus beach equals true happiness.
Sweetwater Rooftop Bar
Nothing says Sunday sesh like a rooftop bar, and Sweetwater is one of the best. This is one of the more civilised Sunday sesh spots in town, so pop on something nice, get your galfranz together and order a couple of bottles of champers.
