What better way to ring in the new year than escaping to an island, watching fireworks over the ocean and rocking out to the best tunes from the last few decades? But surely that’s not possible in Perth, right?
WRONG! To welcome 2017 with a bang, Rottnest Island will play host to all of these things and more—it’s time to round up your posse and set sail for the New Year’s Eve party you can’t miss!
FIREWORKS OVER THOMSON BAY
Punters can expect loads of ooh-ing and ahh-ing as fireworks burst into twinkling life over the ocean at Thomson Bay. The spectacular lights show kicks off at 9pm so you’ll want to pick your possie (whether it’s on the beach or in a boat) nice and early and make sure you’ve got plenty of photo space on your phones.
POP-UP FOOD VILLAGE
From 5pm you can use up your remaining calories from 2016 at the Food Village where Rottnest Island businesses in the Settlement Mall will be offering speciality dishes to help you ring in the new year! Dine with friends and among strangers (or soon to be friends) at the popular long-table or bring your tasty treats down to Thomson Bay to enjoy as you watch the fireworks.
DECADES DRESS-UP PARTY AT HOTEL ROTTNEST
Who doesn’t love a dress-up party, especially when they involve crimped hair, shoulder pads and neon leotards. Hotel Rottnest will play host to a New Year’s Eve Decades Party where DJs NDORSE and Paradise Paul will be spinning the best tunes from the 80s, 90s and noughties. Get tickets to the 18+ event here.
POOL PARTY & CRAP MUSIC DISCO PARTY AT KARMA ROTTNEST
Not a fan of seaweed, sand and getting caught in a rip? Head to Karma Rottnest during the day for pool party shenanigans. There’ll be tapas, cocktails and a DJ of course—best pool party ever? We think so! And if shitty disco music is more your jam, the Governor’s Bar will become party town after dark at the Famous Tomás Ford Crap Music Disco Party. This free event will certainly have you jiving to a different beat.
LOADS OF FREE ENTERTAINMENT AND LIVE MUSIC
On top of all this, Rottnest will come alive with loads of free entertainment and live music for everyone to enjoy. Have your face painted with glow-in-the-dark paint, enjoy the fun stage shows, take selfies with roving performers and send the kids off to a silent disco to get them out of your hair for a while. It’s all happening between 4pm and 9pm.
But How Do I Get There?
Rottnest Express will be transporting people to and fro ship to shore style with special discounted rates starting at $55 for a return ticket (free for kids under 12 on select services). If you haven’t got time to waste hop on a Rottnest Fast Ferry for $60 return ($35 for kiddos under 12). All ferries will be running past midnight, so not to worry if you can’t lock down accommodation on the island, you can still get home safe and sound in the wee hours of the morning.
BY PRIVATE BOAT
If you are a lucky duck with a boat (or have friends in high places) you can set sail under your own steam, just be wary of the restrictions. More information here.
So what are you waiting for? Get ready to ring in the new year the best way possible at Rotto!
