Australia’s sweltering summer holidays are on our doorstep, and if you’ve decided not to escape the painful heatwaves and trek to the Northern Hemisphere, then you should probably get cracking on some adventurous local things to do around Brisbane.

  1. Beach yourself in the shady spot at South Bank Beach. All our fave Christmas movies are currently playing there!
  2. See a concert at Riverstage.
  3. Have a sunset barbecue at New Farm Park.
  4. Shop in the blissful air-conditioning at the new Zara, H&M and Uniqlo in Queen St Mall.
  5. Have a DIY white Christmas and go iceskating.
  6. Relax and surrender to the sweet sounds at Woodford Folk Festival (27th Dec-1 Jan).
  7. Head to Suncorp Stadium to see the NRL All Stars game in February.
  8. Go Christmas light hunting around the suburbs in the days leading up to Christmas. 
  9. Rock climb at Kangaroo Point Cliffs.
  10. Catch a local band at Black Bear Lodge.
  11. Get your interior designer on and go antiquing at Wooloongabba Antique Centre.
  12. Creep on Roger Federer at the Brisbane International Tennis (3-10 January).
  13. Sip on cocktails and bask in the cool breeze of the river at Riverbar and Kitchen.
  14. Go camping at Wivenhoe Dam.
  15. Check out the free comedy at the Brisbane Powerhouse every Sunday.
  16. See classic musical Les Miserables at QPAC.
  17. Swim with the Dolphins at Tangalooma Island Resort.
  18. Climb the Story Bridge at sunrise when the temperature is tolerable.
  19. See a film at Limes Hotel open air cinema.
  20. Bask in the air-conditioning and watch a film at the local cinemas. And indulge in a delicious choc top while you're there.
  21. Take the ferry to North Straddie for a day of sun and sand.
  22. Warm up your vocal cords for the Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols in Roma Street Parklands.
  23. Do your groceries at the Jan Powers Farmers Markets.
  24. Buy a new summer wardrobe on James Street in New Farm.
  25. Take a circus class at the Powerhouse.
  26. See Brisbane from a kayak with Riverlife.
  27. Grab a gelato or two from La Macelleria Gelateria.
  28. Take a day-trip to Sirromet Winery and sample some thirst quenching wines.
  29. Swap your old winter clothes for cash at Swop in West End.
  30. Crack open a cold one on the balcony at The Regatta Hotel.
  31. Trek the nature walk at Boondall Wetlands.
  32. Put all your chips in at the Treasury Casino & Hotel and spend your winnings at one of Brisbane's best new restaurants.
  33. Down a moscato on the rooftop of The Fox Hotel.
  34. Go windsurfing off the rocky beaches of Manly and Lota.
  35. Trek through the stunning bush walks on Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious.
  36. Get in the spirit at South Bank Christmas Markets (Dec 11-24).
  37. Cycle over the Story Bridge and down the Riverwalk on a breezy day.
  38. Splash the day away at Wet n’ Wild
  39. Spot a Humpback on a whale watching tour in Moreton Bay.
  40. Check out the APT8 exhibition at the very well air-conditioned GOMA.
  41. Explore the new laneways of Brisbane that you haven’t gotten around to visiting yet.
  42. Splash around in the salt-water pool at Wynnum Foreshore.
  43. Play indoor putt-putt golf at the The Golf Spot.
  44. Find a hill with a view and admire the Christmas Fireworks at South Bank from afar (Dec 17-21).
  45. Chill out in a yoga class with strong AC.
  46. Have brunch in Paddington and wander around the shops for last minute gifts.
  47. Take a sneaky stay-cation at Spicers Balfour and admire the stunning views from the converted Queenslander.
  48. Stroll the Cleveland Heritage Walk and end at the historic Grand View Hotel for a beer.
  49. Hire a boat and chug over to Coochiemudlo Island.
  50. Look at the stars from the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium.
