Fried chicken is the ultimate litmus test for real Southern American cooking. (Elvis was a fan, and that's saying something, 'cause that dude knew his junk food.)

With great American restaurants popping up all over Brisbane, there's no shortage of venues to get your fried chook on at.

These are Brisbane's best fried chicken joints. Don't forget your wet wipes.

La Rotisserie | Newstead & Toowong

Meat-haven, La Rotisserie have just added fried chicken to their menu, and we couldn't be happier, because while their chicken tastes just like it should, in all its Southern fried goodness, it has less grease than your average drummie. Yep, their 'Not So Sinful' chicken is not so bad for you, but tastes like the real deal.

Tippler's Tap | Newstead

Tippler's chicken wings taste like a certain Colonel's secret recipe, albeit in petite, wing version. A bucket of these bad boys and a cold frothy, and that's yur afternoon sorted.

Papa Jack's | Fortitude Valley

Er'body who knows fried chicken knows that if you want moist chicken, you need to marinate that bird in buttermilk. Papa Jack's have the creole-menu thing nailed, and their Southern fried chicken with chipotle coleslaw is a cracker.

Lefty's Old Time Music Hall | Petrie Terrace

The guys at Lefty's know that fried chicken is the perfect accompaniment to whiskey and good times. Get your grease on (and do some essential stomach lining) with a basket of their delicious chicken.

South Side Diner | South Brisbane

A fresh take on traditional fried bird, South Side are dishing up a crispy fried duck on a toasted waffle, with pumpkin puree, and maple jus. As you do.

Public | CBD

Speaking of deep fried duck, we have to mention Public's KFD (that's Kentucky fried duck)—an iconic Brisbane dish if ever their was one.

Mizu | Teneriffe

Japanese might not be the first cuisine that comes to mind when you're thinking finger-lickin' chicken, but no one can deny the fried goodness that is Mizu's chicken karaage, made with soy, ginger, garlic, and dash of sesame oil.

Shady Palms | Stones Corner

The only thing that makes fried chicken better is a side of gravy. Luckily Shady Palms crispy chicken comes with smoked chipotle gravy, and coleslaw.

Southern Attitude | Bulimba

If you're a fried chicken fan, a plate of Chicken Fried Chicken, with maple and mustard white gravy, from Bulimba's home to all this Southern and tasty, Southern Attitude, is a must eat.

The Dirty South | Paddington
