We have a good feeling about 2014. It might be the whole even number thing but something tells us this is the year we'll be going misty eyed over and boring our grandchildren with longwinded anecdotes about.
Such a year needs ringing in with appropriate pizzazz. Don't settle for TV fireworks or mumbling along to "Auld Lang Syne" at the family party you always seem to get dragged along to, show 2014 some love with our second round up of Brisbane's best New Year's Eve celebrations.
The Bearded Lady
If you look good in leather, and love a bit of rock 'n' roll theatrics, then this is the NYE party for you. One of our fave haunts in West End, The Bearded Lady will be saying goodby to 2013 with a whole lotta fun and rocky madness. Dress up like your favourite rockstar - leather and big air guitar moves mandatory - and make the start to 2014 totally rockin'! Tickets only $35; book now by calling (07) 3844 3395!
If you're not one for pricey drinks packages and complicated dress codes, Brunswick Social's Come As You Are New Year's Eve party may just be your NYE nirvana. Ring in the New Year with a rule-free night at the Fortitude Valley bar, complete with complimentary champagne throughout the evening. We defy anyone to resist their "Drink what you want. Eat what you want" policy.
Whiskey fans, this one is for you. Ring in the new year in this charming historial CBD bar from 4pm. Their cocktails are well worth fighting cab lines for.
South Bank Surf Club
Ever been to a genuine Luau Party? Us neither, but we can't think of a better occasion than New Year's Eve to give one a road test. South Bank Surf Club's Hawaiian themed extravaganza sees the riverside restaurant transformed into a tropical paradise, complete with pig on a spit, Caribbean rum-glazed skewers and a selection of Tiki cocktails. You'll be saying "Aloha" to 2014 in no time.
As Brisbane's very own urban oasis, we were kind of hoping Cloudland would be celebrating New Year in a suitably botanical fashion. And they certainly haven't disappointed. The Fortitude Valley venue throws an Enchanted Garden Party this year, complete with stilt walkers, human statues and acrobatic forest creatures. Guests can even partake in a game of croquet, although we're hoping there are no flamingos involved.
You'd be hard pushed to find a better spot for enjoying the Brisbane River firework display than Stokehouse's waterfront terrace. The hard part is tearing yourself away from Head Chef, Richard Ousby's extravagant four course meal, the champagne and live entertainment for long enough to watch.
Mumm champagne, live music, canapés and a big screen countdown: Emporium Hotel have got NYE sorted. The Fortitude Valley hotel's New Year's Eve bash greets 2014 with the right balance of style and all-out merriment. Get all the details here!
The Walrus Club
No one likes spilt drinks and overcrowded dance floors, least of all on New Year's Eve. Escape the NYE rush by following Regatta Hotel's unassuming back staircase down to The Walrus Club. The Cuban-themed speakeasy's location may be hush-hush but its Havana Nights NYE celebration promises to be loud. Expect Latino dancers (who are more than happy to dance with you), canapés and a healthy supply of Mojitos. Book here.
Queensland Performing Arts Centre
Inject some culture into your celebrations this year with Queensland Pops Orchestra's New Year'sEve Gala at QPAC. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the much loved orchestra's performances so things are extra special. The night is topped off with champagne, canapés and fireworks on the QPAC roof terrace.
The Fox Hotel
The Fox Hotel looks to the bright lights of New York for their New Year's Eve celebrations. Transforming into a multi-level warehouse with five Big Apple-inspired zones including the Manhattan roof top and the Lower East Side long bar, the South Brisbane hotel's NYE Warehouse Party sees live musical performances from The Belligerents and Holland Park favourites, The Kramers, as well as street food carts, go-go girls and of course, fireworks.
In true New Orleans style, James Street newbie Papa Jack's are hosting a Mardi Gras themed New Years party to ring in 2014. There will be cocktails, canapes, prizes for best dressed, and at the end of the night they'll be crowning King and Queen of the carnival. Fun!
New Year's doesn't get more chilled than the way laid back gig The End have planned. Moses Gunn Collective, Black Amex, and James Wright are just a few of the bands on the line up. Grab a crew and a rainbow beer and get ready party.
The Chalk Hotel will be taking NYE to Paris on the 31st of December with a special Midnight in Paris themed party. Two specially Franco-centric themed spaces—1920s Montmarte and a French discothèque—will be the perfect spot for Edith Piaf fans or Daft Punk die-hards to welcome in the new year. Sip on French bubbles on arrival and nibble at the local delicacies from the Frenchy food station. Ooh la la! Tickets are only $99 for a four-hour package so get booking now.
Next Door Kitchen & Bar
The 1920s was such a New Year's appropriate era: sparkling dresses, flowing Champagne (well, mostly in secret?they were partying through Prohibition after all), and peeps that knew how to party. Brisbane's favourite Prohibition-themed bar is taking you back to the golden age with their very classy-cool brand of soiree. Think cocktails, burlesque dancers and fab prizes. Check out their website for how to be front and centre at this little shin-dig.
New Years Early at Libertine
With no set menus and no set packages, Libertine will be providing the perfect pre-party party location. If you are looking for a great meal before the revelry kicks off (or if the call of bed is just too good to refuse) then head to Libertine from 4pm til 8pm on NYE. Book now to secure your place at this low-key part-ay.
Mexicans certainly know how to party, and TUL fave Chilliwow is showing us the way on NYE with their colourful and festive 'Chilli Con Carnivale'. This hot tamale of a bash will feature a Mariachi band and DJ, pinatas (woo!) and dancers to entertain you throughout the night. Arriba! Call 07 3252 8491 or email to book your group in for a night of fun and vibrant debauchery, Latino style!
Carnival is about the most fun you can have on planet earth, so you know the summer Carnivale themed NYE party at Byblos is going to be a goodie. With Brazilian Carnivale dancers, and loads of South American entertainment, including a calypsos drummer, and a DJ with bongo drums, we dare you not to dance! There will be tapas and food stations on hand to keep you fed, as well as Tiki cocktails and fab range of drinks to keep you watered. After you've watched the fireworks, there will be complimentary buses to Fortitude Valley. Thoughtful? For all the details click here.
