Degustations usually conjure up images of pristine white plates, cutlery laid out in size-ascending order and the chink of wine glasses. But given the current circumstances, and the unprecedented innovation that a lot of industries have had to implement, degustation has had to take on a new meaning. Picture it: your dining table, your cutlery (in whatever size you want) and either your fruit-patterned plates or the art deco ones that usually scrape by with a sandwich atop. It’s a degustation on your terms, and City Winery are here to show you how.
The team at this urban winery are just one example of some pioneering happening around town at the moment, with the introduction of their ‘degustation-via-skype’—the first of its kind (we think). In line with their monthly showcase of one of their chef’s exquisite talents, City Winery has taken the initiative to deliver the tastes and gustatory sensations to you, accompanied by a careful selection of wines, a nice napkin, candles and a flower.
It goes like this. The team delivers the goods (wine can be included or excluded at your discretion) along with plating instructions and a sample photo, notes from the chef and a video explaining the meal and wine pairings for the evening. Then, join the live stream, show off your plating skills, and eat alongside your virtual guests. The only thing you’ll need is an oven.
The first virtual degustation will happen on Saturday 4 April, with (we hope) more to come. You can find all the details and register for the fanciest home dinner you ever had here.
When: Saturday 4 April, 6pm
