Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia is in full swing in Sydney.

It all kicked off with Aje’s serene Resort '20 presentation at the recently unveiled heritage-listed Campbell’s Stores in The Rocks. Inspired by the raw beauty of the Australian environment, billowing dresses in eucalyptus green, wattle flower yellow and gumtree red and pink were set against the backdrop of the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and a stunning Sunday sunset.

On day two, Bec + Bridge took us to the West Coast and P.E Nation revealed a major collab with Speedo and made it rain to a sick soundtrack by Nicky Nighttime. Matteau refreshed our taste for neutral over neon and we fell a little bit in love with an emerging label called Mi’an’Mar.

As for what it all means (and what you'll be wearing and shopping this summer), let's break it down. Here are three of our favourite trends coming out of Fashion Week so far.

Summer In the 70s

Fashion’s obsession with retro shows no sign of slowing down—but you’ll want to pause the 90s vibe for a minute. Get ready to embrace summer in the 70s. Bec + Bridge’s show, aptly titled “Wipe Out”, was all about SoCal circa 1975, set to the sweet sound of the Beach Boys. Models wore flares in Scooby Doo purples, oranges and rich caramels, with crimped hair and huge sunglasses.

The Innovators showcase is dedicated to incredible emerging design talent. Our favourite was Mi'an'Mar, who made streetwear a bit disco and a bit 70s era New York slash disco, with lashings of seafoam green and accents of rich cherry red. If you thought flares might be on the way back, standby—they're definitely here.

Big Billowing, Ballooning Volume

Forget straight up and down, it's time to take flight with billowing balloon sleeves, on jackets, dresses and tops. At Aje, dresses with dramatic circle trains caught the harbour breeze, while models in Jonathan Simkhai's bombers and gowns floated down the runway at North Bondi Surf Life Saving Club. P.E Nation added volume to their signature sporty silhouette with a new set of graphic bombers.

Neutral Over Neon

After a few seasons of full-on fluoro, it's time to tone it down. Browns are a going to be a big vibe this summer—think sugary toffee, gingerbread, cinnamon and peanut. Sounds kind of delicious.

Matteau is known for the pared-back aesthetic, and their Resort '20 collection kept things peaceful with sweet gold chain accents.
