Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a cultural celebration in Mexico, where the dead are not feared, but celebrated with food, music, extravagant costumes and offerings to the departed. Choosing to revel in life, the lively Mexicans do not fear death, but rather celebrate the dead and happily live alongside them.
Dia de los Muertos is celebrated in late October in Mexico, but you won’t need a plane ticket, because the festivities will be coming to Australia in the form of Day of the Dead Warehouse Festival. Inspired by the likes of Burning Man and Midsummer Night’s Dream in Russia, the festival will run for three days across Sydney (October 24), Melbourne (October 31) and Brisbane (November 7).
This is the Day of the Dead party to end all DOTD parties, so don your brightest, most eye-catching costume, leave your inhibitions at the door, and get lost in the world of Dia de los Muertos. We can’t spoil all of the surprises, but we can tell you there will be art, there will be music, there will be dancing, there will be delicious Mexican street food, there will be sin, and yes, there will absolutely be tequila and mezcal (and lots of it).
If you think you’ve seen it all when it comes to festivals, think again. Picture head-to-toe body paint, interactive art and light installations, street art, authentic Mexican altars, and even more surprises. It’s a world away from the reality you’re used to, so get ready to honour the dead by celebrating with the living at Day of the Dead Warehouse Festival, where you can let loose and experience a new world.
It’s all about an authentic Mexican cultural experience, with cold cervezas, inspired cocktails and delicious food by Playa Takeria, the guys behind some of Sydney’s best Mexican, who have curated a Day Of The Dead-inspired street food menu to complete the experience.
Heed our words: Don’t miss out.
