Tucked away in a dark corner of Mount Hawthorn, Perth pizza joint Neighborhood Pizza is a big-on-flavour pizzeria fast becoming a favourite local hangout.
Yeah yeah, I know your Mum told you to avoid dark alleyways at night, but the wood-fired aroma wafting down Anvil Lane will have you throwing caution to the wind and plunging headlong into the dark.
The industrial-style space itself is simple – an old concrete warehouse filled with worn-in rugs, long wooden tables and a few crates to sit on. But sterile it aint with the laid-back atmosphere undeniably cosy – a big red pool table in the corner adding to the casual feel.
The one thing Neighborhood is serious about, fittingly, is pizza. Aside from an obligatory salad, it’s all they serve – in a multitude of varieties. Whether you’re vegetarian, lactose intolerant, gluten-free or a meat-lover like me, you’ll be happily chowing down in no time.
As my chorizo addiction knows no bounds, my personal favourite was lucky number 13 – hot chorizo and bocconcini on a tomato base. Coming in a close second was the sweet potato pizza with rosemary, feta and maple syrup on a bianca base. Maple and potato you say? It was like dinner and dessert all in one. Boom!
The folks in charge of things at Neighborhood like to keep things fresh, offering a special pizza each month. When I visited, the new kid on the block was a brussels sprout and speck pizza, which despite being chorizo-free, was absolutely delicious.
The long tables and ample seating make this the perfect place to bring a bunch of mates. You’re also welcome to bring your own booze, which is always a nice (albeit dangerous!) touch.
Not feeling social? Neighborhood also offers take-away. They don’t deliver though, so you’ll need to take the trip down the dark alley – but don’t worry, it’ll be worth it.
