Keeping up with the best events, new openings, pop-ups, and good things to eat in Perth is no mean feat (and we would know!). To make your life that little bit easier, and because we love a good list, we’ve teamed up with Peroni to bring you What’s Trending: A one-stop guide to everything worth checking out in your city this month, so you won’t miss a thing.
Not only is December serving up scorching temps, she's also got a lot going on in the eating, drinking and entertaining department. Get on it Perth peeps!
#1. Poke Bowls Are The New It Health Food
If you haven’t heard of a poke bowl (pronounced poh-kay) yet, it's basically summer in a bowl. While the dish has been around in Hawaii forever, it’s only taken Perth by storm recently. But what is it, you ask? Put simply, poke is cubed, raw fish, which admittedly doesn’t sound all that exciting, but when you go nuts with the other flavours it’s a real treat. Think coconut and lime dressing served with delish goodies like brown rice, avocado, mango, coriander and all that sort of goodness—it’s sounding a bit more appealing now, right? Here are three spots where you can get a poke bowl in Perth.
#2. The Masses Are Going Mad For Drunken Doughnuts
Perth people are drunk with excitement over our first drunken doughnut shop, MOP Donuts. Open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, MOP serves tasty balls of dough filled with our favourite liqueurs like Bailey's, Cointreau and Gin. There's even an espresso martini flavour, heck yes! You can find all the deets here.
#3. Christmas Is All Around Us
The season to be jolly has arrived and Perth is serving up loads of fun festive events, so bust out those jingle bells and get ready to ride your sleigh right into the new year. Check out the Christmas projections on the GPO building between 2 and 23 December, the Carols By Candlelight on 18 December and the Christmas nativity from 20 to 23 December. Click here for more fun-filled events this December.
#4. Everything Outdoors—Concerts, Festivals And Gigs
With the arrival of warm, balmy evenings, Perth's taking its music scene outdoors this December. Head to Bar Pop's Live At The Orchard and witness acts like Drapht and Harts, climb up to Kings Park to catch our favourite forgotten musician, Rodriguez, head out to Rotto for Castaway or check out the Symphony in the City with the stunning city skyline as the backdrop. You might want to take out another credit card!
#5. Escaping The Heat With Weekends Away
While we all love summer, when the mercury rises above 35 there's nothing better than escaping the city for a cooler (but still warm) weekend away. Whether it's Dunsborough and Margaret River, the Ferguson Valley, Denmark or Albany, you can do no wrong.
#6. Picnics = Our Favourite Excuse To Eat Cheese
Summer is the time for picnics and Perth is home to some killer spots, some of which you've probably never heard of. So what are you waiting for? Call your favourite gourmet deli and have them whip you up a picnic basket filled with all of the goodies (read: cheese). Don't forget to pack a blanket and some mozzie repellant.
#7. Taking Our Pooches Everywhere
Dogs are always on trend, but with the arrival of warmer weather so are all the dog-friendly places in Perth. There's loads of furry fun to be had at the beach or your favourite dog-friendly cafe. And while we're talking about our favourite fluff balls, here's 27 Things Only Dog Owners Will Understand.
#8. Beach Drinking Is Now Legal
Check us out! Bathers Beach House in Fremantle is Australia's first-ever liquor licenced beachfront bar and restaurant, so you can now enjoy your drinks with your feet in the sand. Get a share plate and a couple of cocktails delivered directly to your sun lounge while you sit back and live like a king.
#9. Walking And Hiking Everywhere
Walks and hikes are always popular with Perth's fitspo crowd, but now's the prime time to get outdoors for some blood pumping action. There are countless walks and hikes to choose from, a few secret ones if you're not a fan of crowds and even a really long hike down south if you want to seriously stretch your legs.
#10. Lazy Sunday Drinks
Sundays and drinking go hand in hand and if you're looking for one of the best Sunday sessions in Perth, look no further than the newly refurbished Guildford Hotel. They've got $15 bloody mary's topped with mini-burgers, $30 craft beer buckets, $35 iced tea jugs and loads of Peroni on tap. Good times, good times!
