There’s a lot to love about Christmas Day, but if we’re being honest, the 24-hour window leaves some room for improvement. Before you know it, you’ve polished off half a kilo of prawns, your second serve of Christmas pudding and a fifth glass of champagne followed by an afternoon food coma and poof, the day is done.

So to help you well and truly extend the festivities of Christmas, we’ve teamed up with Brisbane Marketing to round up the best Christmas events going down in and around the city.

Christmas Lights In The City

Forget what you know about Christmas lights because this years epic light shows are about to up your holiday game. The Lights Of Christmas, created by AGB Events (most famously known for their work on Sydney's Vivid Lightwalk) will be set on the lawn of the stunning St Stephen’s Cathedral, with a light dislpay of epic proportion every evening from the 12th of December until Christmas Eve.

Plus, the Gold Lotto City Hall Lights are also making a return so you can shop all day and then get around some festive fun at night with nightly shows from December 7.

Christmas Classics Under The Stars

We hate to judge, but if you don’t re-watch classic Christmas movies in the lead up to the big day, you’re doing it wrong. South Bank’s Christmas Cinema is taking our holly jolly festivities from naught to 100 with their nightly movie pop-up kicking off at River Quay from Friday 14 December. Warm the cockles of your heart with OG movies like Elf, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Home Alone. Relax and take a load off on the lawn with some tasty snacks and bevvies and soak up all of that holiday cheer. Plus, BYO wine will make your Christmas wishes come true.

Festive Fireworks

There’s a lot going on in Brisbane in the lead up to Christmas, but the cherry on top of this delicious Christmas sundae is the shimmering fireworks display. The Clem Jones Promenade provides a jaw-dropping vantage point to watch the show unfold. Streets Beach, River Quay and the Cultural Forecourt also provide top-notch locations for a viewing party.

Christmas Market Magic

Nothing quite warms the cockles of our hearts like a Christmas market and luckily South Bank’s Christmas Gift Market will not disappoint. Weave through the Parklands and discover hidden gems, with goodies like stationery, jewellery, homewares and more. There’s even drool-worthy market fare so you can snack while you shop. Now that’s our kind of market.

The Enchanted Garden

Calling all kidults, you can’t miss out on The Enchanted Garden at Roma Street Parklands. This fully immersive show will get you feeling like a child again with winding pathways to roam lined with towering trees and loads of lush plants. Shimmering gardens, twinkling weeping figs and the warm glow of mesmerising fairy lights make it the perfect destination for a balmy evening walk. Finish up down by the lake and get in on the delish food trucks and live music on offer.

Picnic In The Park With Twilight Carols

Everyone loves Christmas carols, but this year Brisbane’s serving them with a side of delish food and vino to raise the stakes—Merry Christmas indeed! South Bank Parklands’ Carols by Twilight will make River Quay its home this year. Carolers will be able to relax by the river on the lush green lawn with a picnic or indulge in some takeaway delights from the mouth-watering nearby restaurants. Oh, and did we mention it’s BYO wine?
