We’ve always known BLACK Bar at Black by ezard at The Star for consistently making our list of Sydney’s best restaurants, but when we headed in to check out the venue, we did something extremely out-of-character, but just as rewarding for us; we bypassed the restaurant entirely and parked ourselves at the bar. We enjoyed an afternoon of very professional research in the form of watching bartender extraordinaire Marco Oshiro create amazing cocktails, and then we drank them. All of them. I know, I know, we hate ourselves sometimes too.
While there are some classics on the menu at BLACK, the attention-to-detail and thought that goes into the cocktails pretty much bowled us over. Take the Christmas Cocktail for example. Yes, we know, the holiday season is over, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still get merry. This one is a refreshing medley of Christmassy flavours; Marco begins with house-steeped Christmas brandy made with fruit soaked in Cognac, blends in a delightful little thing called Christmas bitters, tops with a house-made cranberry and vanilla reduction and garnished with fresh mint and a wedge of blood orange. Oh, and a candy cane, because we like something fun to stir our drink with.
Secondly, who’s a fan of the man himself, Ryan Gosling? (Stupid question, we know.) If you are, BLACK is your new favourite Sydney bar. And ours too, because any cocktail bar with a drink on the menu called Rye & Gosling is just fine by us. It’s a strong, boozy number with rye whiskey, Goslings Rum, a dash of suave, exotic Aphrodite bitters, that tempting Luxardo Maraschino liqueur, and Braulio Alpine liqueur so it’s extra easy to snuggle up next to.
We could spend hours working our way through the cocktail list at Sydney bar, BLACK (and we did) while giving you every last detail, but we all know the best way to learn is by doing. So do it!
The best thing about going to BLACK Bar is being able to sample things you never thought would be your style. The guys behind this Sydney bar certainly know the art of the cocktail. So when you head in yourself, make sure to park yourselves on the bar with an open mind and let Marco and the team lead the way.
