Hello Cupcake! Black Velvet Sydney Opens

There's something all too familiar about the façade of the newly opened Black Velvet Sydney. Its extravagant window display immediately hails back to that infamous scene at Breakfast at Tiffany's, as Audrey, danish and coffee in hand, stares wistfully into the store. Now swap jewels for tier upon tier of cupcakes and you'll get a sense of what we mean.

The brainchild of Sydney interior designer, Orlando Sanpo, Black Velvet Sydney is a luxurious cupcakery that's home to more than 100 flavours. Yep, one hundred flavours! But it's not just cupcakes here – there's shelves lined with indulgent handmade chocolate, custom-made cakes and creamy frosting served by the jar full. Salivating yet? Let us welcome you to dessert heaven.

Since setting up shop in late July, Black Velvet Sydney has already garnered a cult following and we can see why. Its lemon vodka cupcake took out the prestigious gold prize at this year's 27th Annual Bake Off Awards, so it's pretty safe to say these guys are cupcake pros. The black and white design of the space was inspired by Chanel (without the hefty price tag!) and resonates with Orlando's dream to share the sweeter things in life. After exploring Melbourne's thriving coffee and dessert scene, Orlando decided to turn his talents to baking. Studying some 35 cupcake books, Orlando went on to develop his own cupcake recipe which  uses 40 per cent less sugar than regular cupcakes - so there's no need to worry about the waistline. Whew!

The cupcakes are baked fresh daily, and are fluffy pops of joy. There are four signature flavours including the prize winning lemon vodka, salted caramel, black velvet and passionfruit, as well as five daily specials, one of which is vegan and gluten-free (hooray!). Specialty flavours are chosen depending on the season, with unusual combinations like bacon and cheese, hot dog and salmon thrown into the mix. To accompany the cupcakes, enjoy Black Velvet's selection of gourmet teas, hot chocolate (the best we've ever tasted!), and 'The Designer Blend' that comes from Melbourne's Single Estate Coffee.

There are also a variety of beautiful gifts on offer, including 100 per cent natural soy candles with nine scents that change every month. This is your one-stop-shop for a little sweet indulgence.

Be sure to drop in next time you're in Darlinghurst to taste one of Sydney's best cupcakes. And don't forget to look out for their $2 cupcake promotions Monday through Wednesday. Yum!
