50% smokehouse, 50% bar, 100% awesome. LP's Quality Meats in Chippendale has been putting the hungry diners of Sydney into meat-induced comas since it opened a few weeks ago. With their smoker imported from Texas—the BBQ capital of the world—these guys are bringing legitimate American BBQ to Sydney. And our meat loving bellies couldn't be happier.
Luke Powell is the LP behind LP's Quality Meats. Formerly from the kitchens of Tetsuya's and Mary's (home to one of Sydney's best burgers), Powell has worked hard to create a truly authentic BBQ experience and it shows. Their huge 'Southern Pride' smoker holds over 100 chickens, which is a whole lotta bird in anyone's books. Used to smoke all manners of protein, don't expect to find ribs or pulled pork anywhere on the menu here. The guys at LP's Quality Meats want to showcase the wide variety of meats beyond the on-trend pulled pork.
With a small range of smoked meats that includes half or whole chicken, lamb belly, Toulouse sausage, and the popular beef short rib on offer, there is certainly plenty to choose from at this new Sydney restaurant. We opt for the lamb belly stuffed with merguez (because meat stuffed with meat is too good not to order) and the Toulouse sausage (because, SAUSAGE). The lamb belly was fatty—but good fatty—and had a distinct smokiness, which was perfectly complemented by the merguez sausage it was wrapped around. The Toulouse sausage was delicious in all its meaty glory and tasted even better when accompanied with one of the three dips provided (and the soft bread rolls!).
In addition to the smoked meat main event, the cold cuts are all made in-house and are sliced to order. For a little break from the protein, the kale with chickpeas is a hit as is the corn on the cob. We also loved the smoked salmon and pickled sardines which were packed full of flavour. And of course, you can't go wrong with the famous mashed potato and gravy that was seen at Mary's and can now be devoured at LP's Quality Meats. I'm not going to lie, we may have dipped our Toulouse sausage in it, too (it's a winning combination!).
If you miraculously have any room in your stomach for dessert, we suggest giving the sole option on the menu a go. Actually, even if you have no room in your stomach, you need to eat this. The pounding choumer is a Canadian dessert that's basically a maple syrup cake that is all sorts of amazing. Order it and thank us later.
This 100-seat Sydney restaurant with polished concrete floors and large share tables reminds us of the mechanic's garage it once was. With an open kitchen for us to take a peek into, fully stocked bar (you're looking at a 70-strong wine list) and some of the best BBQ you'll come across in Sydney, LP's Quality Meats should be a must-visit on your list of restaurants in Sydney. Now where's my bed? I'm falling into a meat coma.
