Named after the iconic Robert Louis Stevenson novel associated with 'split personality', Jekyll & Hyde is a venue that wears many masks – humble café by day, sleek wine bar at night. Nestled in Darlinghurst's bustling dining precinct, this sophisticated bar and eatery extends into a lovely 'secret' courtyard out back, which is perfect for sunny afternoons. The cheerful staff at one of Sydney's best bars create a welcoming experience any time of day, and those who come once tend to come again.
On weekends, brunch is served till 2pm and includes tasty morsels like ricotta pancakes, bacon and egg spring rolls, and ocean trout salad. There's coffee from Single Origin Roasters, bloody Marys and an assortment of other brekkie cocktails if you're game.
Dinner is designed to be shared and features an innovative mix of global flavours, with plenty of gluten-free options too. Start with haloumi drizzled with lemon honey syrup before moving on to snapper tostadas, crispy fried zucchini flowers and grilled chorizo with chimmichurri. For mains, we'd go for the crispy skinned pork belly with sweet potato colcannon and apple pork jus (yes!) or the beef rillette with beetroot relish and olive oil balsamic jelly. The charcuterie board with pickles and crusty bread certainly wouldn't go amiss, while the warm beetroot and goats cheese tart with candied walnuts is a great option for the vegetarians. Dessert is a difficult choice. Our eyes are on the chocolate fondant but the espresso panna cotta would also be very welcome on the table and in our bellies.
For a little something to drink, the wine list is predominantly local with a few drops from abroad, including Argentinian Malbec, Spanish Tempranillo and Veuve Ambal sparkling from France. Those in need of something a little stronger, the inventive cocktail list features twists on well-loved classics, with highlights including the elderflower sour served on the rocks and the strawberry and cucumber margarita.
Keep an eye out for Jekyll & Hyde's weekly specials, including $8 wines by the glass each Wednesday, buy one get one free tapas on Thursdays, $12 cocktails all night Fridays and bottomless mimosas on Saturdays. The gorgeous space is also great for private functions, and the friendly staff will happily talk you through what's on offer. We'll see you there!
